Analysis of T and NK cell subsets in the Sicilian population from young to supercentenarian: The role of age and gender

Mattia Emanuela Ligotti et al.

Summary: Ageing significantly impacts the number and function of both innate and adaptive arms of the immune system, particularly T cell subsets. Analysis of Sicilian subjects revealed that the changes in CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cell subgroups in older individuals are gender-dependent. The supercentenarian displayed an immunophenotypic profile resembling that of an octogenarian female, indicating a unique immune response compared to others in her age group.

Hallmarks of T cell aging

Maria Mittelbrunn et al.

Summary: In this Review, Mittelbrunn and Kroemer propose ten molecular hallmarks as common denominators of T cell aging, which include primary and secondary hallmarks explaining the manifestation of T cell aging and its impact on overall deterioration. The challenge now is to weigh the relative impact of these hallmarks on T cell aging and understand their interconnections, with the goal of defining molecular targets for interventions in the aging process.

miR-21 and miR-146a: The microRNAs of inflammaging and age-related diseases

Fabiola Olivieri et al.

Summary: Inflammaging is a key concept in understanding how aging contributes to the development of age-related diseases, with a focus on the role of miRNAs in regulating inflammatory pathways. The assessment of individual genetic make-up alone is insufficient to depict the trajectories of age-related inflammation, and studies have shown that circulating inflammamiRs could be used to measure the degree of inflammaging.

Targeting immune dysfunction in aging

Simone Borgoni et al.

Summary: Human aging is a multifactorial phenomenon that affects various organ systems and cellular processes, with the immune system being one of the most dysregulated. The immune changes that occur during aging, such as immunosenescence and inflammaging, result in increased susceptibility to infections, reduced healing abilities, and the emergence of age-associated diseases. Therapeutic approaches targeting specific immune subpopulations affected by aging have the potential to rejuvenate the immune system and improve healthspan.
