Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

Knowledge and perceptions of Australian postgraduate veterinary students prior to formal education of antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance

Josh W. McClelland et al.

Summary: The study revealed that veterinary students have a certain level of awareness about AMR and AMU issues, but there are still differences in specific knowledge. Most students recognized the significant role of livestock producers in AMU, showing a high degree of recognition. However, a considerable number of students still have doubts about whether AMR can spread from animals to humans.

Public knowledge, attitude, and practice regarding antibiotics use in Punjab, Pakistan: a cross-sectional study

Ali Hassan Gillani et al.

Summary: The study found a significant proportion of inappropriate antibiotics use among the general population of Punjab, Pakistan, including a lack of accurate knowledge about antibiotics and a high rate of self-medication without a doctor's prescription. Being married, having higher knowledge about antibiotics use, ever purchasing antibiotics without a doctor's prescription, and storing antibiotics at home were significantly associated with self-medication practices. Intervention measures are necessary to improve health literacy and monitor antibiotic sales in retail pharmacies.

Antibiotic resistance in Pakistan: a systematic review of past decade

Hazrat Bilal et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the antibiotic resistance scenario in Pakistan over the past 10 years and found high resistance of pathogens to commonly used antibiotics, as well as gaps in surveillance practices and methodological data. Recommendations were made to strengthen surveillance practices and take precise actions to combat antimicrobial resistance in the region.

Gram-negative neonatal sepsis in low- and lower-middle-income countries and WHO empirical antibiotic recommendations: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Sophie C. H. Wen et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis focused on neonatal sepsis in low- and lower-middle-income countries since 2010, revealing Gram-negative organisms as a major cause, with significant rates of antimicrobial resistance. Regional differences in bacterial prevalence and resistance highlight the need for region-specific empirical treatment recommendations.

Antibiotic resistance in microbes: History, mechanisms, therapeutic strategies and future prospects

Tanvir Mahtab Uddin et al.

Summary: Antibiotics have been a crucial tool in treating bacterial infections for over 70 years, but the rise of multidrug-resistant bacteria has posed a significant challenge, necessitating the discovery of innovative medicinal approaches and antimicrobial therapies. Further research and development in combating antibiotic resistance are vital in addressing the emerging threat of antimicrobial resistance.
