Neural signalling of gut mechanosensation in ingestive and digestive processes

Minyoo Kim et al.

Summary: Eating and drinking generate sequential mechanosensory signals along the digestive tract, which are important for the proper intake and digestion of nutrients and water. Recent discoveries of specific mechanoreceptors, ion channels, and neural circuits have expanded our understanding of these processes.

Divergence of neuroimmune circuits activated by afferent and efferent vagal nerve stimulation in the regulation of inflammation

Kaitlin Murray et al.

Summary: Our study reveals that vagus nerve stimulation can inhibit inflammation, with efferent and afferent stimulation having distinct mechanisms. Immune regulation induced by vagus nerve stimulation is beta(2)-adrenergic receptor-dependent, suggesting unique pathways for controlling immune cell activation through efferent and afferent stimulation.

Transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation improves functional dyspepsia by enhancing vagal efferent activity

Ying Zhu et al.

Summary: This study found that transcutaneous auricular vagal nerve stimulation has therapeutic potential for functional dyspepsia by improving gastric accommodation and slow waves through enhancing vagal efferent activity, leading to alleviation of dyspeptic symptoms, anxiety, and depression.

Duodenal eosinophilia and the link to anxiety: A population-based endoscopic study

Jukka Ronkainen et al.

Summary: Based on the study findings, it is suggested that duodenal eosinophilia may be a mechanism linked to anxiety, independent of functional dyspepsia. Clinical anxiety was found to be elevated in individuals with duodenal eosinophilia at baseline, indicating a potential association between gastrointestinal inflammation and mental health.

Vagal gut-brain signaling mediates amygdaloid plasticity, affect, and pain in a functional dyspepsia model

Zachary A. Cordner et al.

Summary: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is associated with abnormal gastric signals affecting the vagus nerve, which leads to changes in affective and pain behavior in key brain regions. FD rats exhibit increased vagal activity in response to gastric distention, as well as gastric mast cell hyperplasia and alterations in Crh signaling in the amygdala. Subdiaphragmatic vagotomy reverses these changes and restores behavior, suggesting a bottom-up pathway involving the gut-brain axis in the pathogenesis of FD symptoms.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth in Functional Dyspepsia: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Saravana Ruban Gurusamy et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found a significant association between functional dyspepsia (FD) and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), with SIBO prevalence higher in FD patients compared to controls. The quality of evidence was low due to heterogeneity in breath test types and clinical factors. Further well-designed studies are needed to confirm the link between SIBO and FD.
