Epidemiology and Ecology of Severe Fever With Thrombocytopenia Syndrome in China, 2010-2018

Dong Miao et al.

Summary: The study analyzed surveillance data on laboratory-confirmed SFTS cases in China from 2010 to 2018, revealing an increasing trend in SFTS cases and a declining case fatality rate, as well as the identification of four geographical clusters. The research indicated that the diffusion and persistence of SFTS are influenced by factors such as elevation, vegetation coverage, and the proximity of habitats of migratory birds, suggesting targeted interventions based on risk factors.

Mapping ticks and tick-borne pathogens in China

Guo-Ping Zhao et al.

Summary: Understanding the ecological niches of major tick species and prevalent tick-borne pathogens is crucial for efficient surveillance and control of tick-borne diseases. The study in China reveals that Haemaphysalis longicornis harbors the highest variety of tick-borne agents among various tick species.

Projecting the potential distribution of ticks in China under climate and land use change

Xin Yang et al.

Summary: Ticks are vectors of pathogens causing various diseases in humans and animals. China has over 100 tick species, but limited knowledge on their future distribution hinders prevention and control efforts. Using the MaxEnt model, this study identified key environmental factors and projected potential distribution of four tick species in China in 2050 under different climate and socioeconomic scenarios. Results showed that with climate warming, tick distributions shifted further north, while forest reduction led to decreased probabilities in central and southern China. Contrary to previous findings, an overall reduction in distribution probability was projected under the extreme emission scenario (RCP8.5) due to land use effects. This research provides valuable information for identifying emerging risk areas and improving tick-borne disease prevention and control strategies in mainland China.

The Role of Ticks in the Emergence of Borrelia burgdorferi as a Zoonotic Pathogen and Its Vector Control: A Global Systemic Review

Sabir Hussain et al.

Summary: This study found that 19 species of ticks carry Borrelia burgdorferi, with the majority being Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes scapularis ticks. The increasing distribution of tick-associated Borrelia burgdorferi is likely driven by accelerated tick population increases and tick dispersal via migratory birds. There are gaps in research on Borrelia burgdorferi in Asia and Africa, and consideration of environmentally friendly vector control strategies is needed in Europe and North America.

Host association of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato: A review

Katherine A. Wolcott et al.

Summary: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) is a bacterial species complex that causes Lyme borreliosis, the most frequently reported vector-borne disease in the Northern hemisphere. Host and vector associations play a crucial role in the geographic distribution and speciation of Bbsl, which are relevant to human health. Current knowledge on host associations in Bbsl is limited and further research, particularly experimental studies using xenodiagnosis and genomics, is needed to fully understand the interactions among hosts, vectors, and bacteria involved in this complex system.

Recent Progress in Lyme Disease and Remaining Challenges

Jason R. Bobe et al.

Summary: Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the United States, with many patients experiencing persistent symptoms following treatment. The research community lacks funding for advancing scientific and clinical understanding of the disease, and there are still many unanswered questions about diagnosis, clinical presentation, and treatment.
