Immiscible PHB/PBS and PHB/PBSA blends: morphology, phase composition and modelling of elastic modulus

Summary: This study investigates the thermal, morphological, and mechanical properties of environmentally friendly poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)/poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) and PHB/poly[(butylene succinate)-co-(butylene adipate)] (PBSA) blends, revealing that while the blends are immiscible, they exhibit some mechanical compatibility. The elastic modulus is found to be properly described by the rule of mixtures across the composition range, with ductility increasing with higher PBS or PBSA content. The unusual behavior is attributed to a co-continuous morphology and shrinkage during sequential crystallization, potentially leading to physical adhesion between the blend components.

Enhancement of polyhydroxyalkanoate production by co-feeding lignin derivatives with glycerol in Pseudomonas putida KT2440

Summary: Co-feeding lignin derivatives with glycerol was shown to increase cell dry weight and PHA content in P. putida KT2440. The addition of lignin derivatives altered the distribution of PHA monomers and benzoate acted as an independent factor in PHA synthesis. Proteomics and metabolomics analysis revealed that benzoate stimulated oxidative-stress responses and altered intracellular NADH/NADPH ratios, increasing energy generation and storage processes for enhanced PHA biosynthesis.
