Engineered Cathode Buffer Layers for Highly Efficient Organic Solar Cells: A Review

Swati Bishnoi et al.

Summary: This article provides a detailed insight into the efficient cathode buffer layers (CBLs) in conventional and inverted organic solar cells (OSCs). The CBL can improve the performance of the devices by reducing contact resistance and charge recombination, leading to efficient charge extraction and enhanced power conversion efficiency. The chemical composition, morphology, thickness, dopants, and deposition conditions of CBL and their effects on device performance are discussed. The best performing CBLs are summarized and their chemical structures are examined.

Imidazole-Functionalized Imide Interlayers for High Performance Organic Solar Cells

Ming Liu et al.

Summary: Imidazole-functionalized naphthalene diimide and perylene diimide have been synthesized efficiently and at low cost to serve as versatile cathode interlayers in organic solar cells. These small molecules exhibit high electron affinity and conductivity, effectively lowering the work function of metal electrodes and enhancing electron transport in organic electronic devices. Compared to amine-functionalized interlayers, imidazole-functionalized molecules show improved film-forming properties and charge transport, making them promising for applications in organic electronics.

An underestimated photoactive area in organic solar cells based on a ZnO interlayer

Zhi Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of resistance of sol-gel grown ZnO interlayer on solar cell performance, revealing that UV-induced doping effect can lead to underestimation of photoactive area and overestimation of Jsc. The argument regarding high-resistance interlayers not leading to overestimated Jsc should be carefully evaluated.
