Comparison and analysis of phase change materials-based reconfigurable silicon photonic directional couplers

Summary: The unique optical properties of phase change materials (PCMs) can be used to develop efficient reconfigurable photonic devices. In this study, we designed, modeled, and compared the performance of programmable 1 x 2 optical couplers based on different PCMs. Among them, Sb2S3-based couplers showed the best overall performance with the lowest insertion losses. By tuning the crystallization, multiple coupling ratios can be reliably programmed into the Sb2S3 directional couplers, allowing for tunable photonic devices.

Reconfigurable Flat Optics with Programmable Reflection Amplitude Using Lithography-Free Phase-Change Material Ultra-Thin Films

Summary: This study demonstrates a significant dynamic optical reflection modulation from a simple layered stack of phase-change material ultra-thin films, allowing control of reflection intensity from strong to complete absorption. Experimentally, modulation amplitudes with optical contrast exceeding 10^4 have been achieved, with the ability to encode intermediate levels of reflection between extreme values.
