Sui Generis Geographical Indications Fostering Localized Sustainable Fashion: A Cross-Industry Assessment

Sara Cavagnero et al.

Summary: As interest in sustainable fashion and localism grows, this paper explores the potential of using geographical indications (GIs) to enhance trust in claims made by fashion businesses. Drawing on qualitative interviews with GI-protected winemakers in Apulia, the paper provides policy recommendations to expand GIs to the fashion industry, while considering the non-terroir nature of apparel and footwear items. The understanding of the economic, ecological, social, and governance implications of expanding GIs is vital to improve the sustainability impact of GIs systems.

Are fashion supply chains capable of coopetition? An exploratory study in the UK

Piyya Muhammad Rafi-Ul-Shan et al.

Summary: This paper explores the concept of 'coopetitive' relationships in fashion supply chains and its significance for competitive advantage and sustainability in the industry. Through a case study of six UK-headquartered fashion companies, the study reveals that capacity sharing, communication and information sharing, and building relationships/partnerships are the motives behind engaging in coopetition interactions. Despite the risks of opportunism, the findings suggest that coopetition is a useful strategy in the challenging landscape of the fashion industry.
