Green finance for soft power: An analysis of China's green policy signals and investments in the Belt and Road Initiative

Christoph Nedopil

Summary: This paper examines why and how China uses green overseas finance in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to establish soft power, finding that while multiple signals have been provided for green finance, the actual actions are insufficient with continued funding of non-green investments. Green finance serves as a tool for building soft power, but its application is limited by a lack of green finance action, leading to a potential dichotomy between soft power signals and actions.

Trade Openness and CO2 Emissions: The Heterogeneous and Mediating Effects for the Belt and Road Countries

Fuzhong Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that the improvement in trade openness has a significant positive effect on CO2 emissions, but the impact varies with different levels of CO2 emissions. The indirect effect of trade openness on CO2 emissions via the economic effect is positive, while the indirect effect through the energy-substitution and technology effect is negative. Therefore, it is necessary to take corresponding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions.

Chinese state-owned commercial banks in reform: inefficient and yet credible and functional?

Godfrey Yeung

Summary: The mixed public-private ownership structure adopted by state-owned commercial banks in China allows them to serve as a credible and convenient channel for the state to provide counter-cyclical lending and long-term financial support for development purposes, contributing to socio-economic and political stability in China. Contrary to conventional institutional analyst views, the ambiguous property rights of SOCBs and their practice of offering favorable loan conditions to state-owned enterprises could actually contribute to their profitability and thus the continuity and credibility of hybrid property banking systems in China.
