Efficiency of gas collection systems at Danish landfills and implications for regulations

Zhenhan Duan et al.

Summary: Landfills are a significant source of anthropogenic methane emissions globally. This paper examines the gas collection efficiencies of 23 Danish landfills and proposes using these values to regulate methane emissions in Denmark. The study finds that the gas collection efficiency in Danish landfills is lower than in Swedish, UK and US landfills, potentially due to factors such as shallow gas collection pipes, leakage from installations, and low gas production. It suggests using gas collection efficiency as a regulatory tool to achieve methane mitigation goals in landfills.

Municipal Solid Waste Management through Sustainable Landfilling: In View of the Situation in Karachi, Pakistan

Ihsanullah Sohoo et al.

Summary: Open disposal is commonly used for MSW management in Pakistan without sanitary landfills, leading to environmental degradation and emissions of greenhouse gases. This study evaluates methane emissions from dumpsites and compares the GHG mitigation potential of different landfill strategies in Karachi. The results show that sanitary landfills with post-aeration conditions have the highest GHG mitigation potential, while uncontrolled waste dumping has the least.

Municipal solid waste management and landfilling technologies: a review

Sonil Nanda et al.

Summary: The USA, China, and India are the top producers of municipal solid waste, with waste composition varying based on income levels. Municipal solid waste management options include recycling, incineration, waste-to-energy conversion, composting, or landfilling. Landfilling is a preferred method globally, with critical factors for sustainability including liners, soil cover thickness, leachate collection, and gas recovery facilities. Landfills act as ecological reactors undergoing various transformations, with bioreactor landfills emerging as a next-generation solution for efficient waste stabilization through controlled recirculation.

Open waste burning causes fast and sharp changes in particulate concentrations in peripheral neighborhoods

Patricia Krecl et al.

Summary: The study found that open burning of municipal solid waste can deteriorate air quality, with varying levels of PM2.5 and BC concentrations in different areas. Residents in the neighborhood reported higher PM2.5 concentrations but lower BC/PM2.5 ratios compared to downtown, and identified poor waste management practices such as waste burning and illegal dump sites. Suggestions to combat this issue include raising public awareness, adopting education initiatives, and enforcing regular inspection of burning events by authorities.

Environmental Sustainability Enhancement of Waste Disposal Sites in Developing Countries through Controlling Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Ihsanullah Sohoo et al.

Summary: The current waste disposal methods in developing countries, including Pakistan, are not meeting standards of proper waste management systems found in developed countries, leading to serious environmental issues at both local and global levels. This study investigates methane emissions from waste dumpsites in Karachi, Pakistan, and proposes an effective approach to enhance their environmental sustainability. By simulating different landfill situations, it was found that a conventional anaerobic landfill with methane capturing facilities and post-aeration operation is the most environmentally sustainable approach, controlling 65% of residual methane emissions compared to the present scenario.
