Early turbulence and pulsatile flows enhance diodicity of Tesla's macrofluidic valve

Quynh M. Nguyen et al.

Summary: Microfluidics has revolutionized the manipulation of small volumes of fluids, while the study also explores the complexities of inertial flow physics in macrofluidics. Experimental results demonstrate that diodicity turns on abruptly at low Reynolds numbers, boosting performance for pulsatile flows and suggesting applications in fluidic mixing and pumping. Additionally, the device proposed by Tesla can operate as a diode for alternating flow at high frequencies, enabled by a transition to turbulent-like flow at low Reynolds numbers.
