Momentum space toroidal moment in a photonic metamaterial

Biao Yang et al.

Summary: Berry curvature, the counterpart of the magnetic field in momentum space, plays a crucial role in electron transport and topological physics. Researchers have successfully demonstrated a toroidal moment of Berry curvature in metamaterials, which has significant implications for future studies.

Observation of surface mode arcs associated with nodal surfaces in electromagnetic metacrystals

Mingli Chang et al.

Summary: In this article, a novel electromagnetic metacrystal was designed, fabricated, and characterized, which topologically carries nontrivial nodal surface degeneracies compensated by charge-2 Weyl points. Experimental observations demonstrated the robust unidirectional transport supported by node surfaces, offering more degrees of freedom to engineer the dispersion of surface states. This system provides a platform to explore a new class of gapless topological electromagnetic wave systems.

Robust topological designs for extreme metamaterial micro-structures

Tanmoy Chatterjee et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significant impact of material uncertainty on the optimal topological micro-structural configuration of mechanical metamaterials. A robust optimization problem is formulated and computational simulations are performed to quantify the effect of input material uncertainty on mechanical properties. Results show improvements in optimal mean performance, least sensitive design, and elastic properties with robust design compared to deterministic design.

Double-bowl state in photonic Dirac nodal line semimetal

Mengying Hu et al.

Summary: In recent years, topological materials have gained significant attention in electronic systems and classical wave systems, particularly Dirac nodal line semimetals. Researchers have proposed a unique mechanism for studying photonic Dirac nodal line semimetals in photonic systems, and experimentally confirmed the existence of double-bowl states and the bulk Dirac nodal ring dispersion.

Subwavelength silicon photonics for on-chip mode-manipulation

Chenlei Li et al.

Summary: On-chip mode-manipulation is a critical aspect for photonic integrated devices and circuits, with subwavelength silicon photonics making great progress in this area. Two popular waveguide structures for on-chip mode-manipulation are silicon hybrid plasmonic waveguides (HPWGs) and silicon subwavelength-structured waveguides (SSWGs). This paper focuses on subwavelength silicon photonic devices and applications, including manipulation of effective indices, modal field profiles, mode dispersion, and birefringence.
