Quantum computational complexity from quantum information to black holes and back

Shira Chapman et al.

Summary: Quantum computational complexity is important in both quantum computation and black hole information processing. This article presents the geometric approach to complexity, discusses the relation between complexity, gravitational quantities, and chaos, and highlights open problems and future directions.

Does Complexity Equal Anything?

Alexandre Belin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new infinite class of gravitational observables in asymptotically anti-de Sitter space living on codimension-one slices of the geometry, the most famous of which is the volume of the maximal slice. The authors show that these observables display universal features for the thermofield-double state, growing linearly in time at late times and reproducing the switchback effect in shock wave geometries. They argue that any member of this class of observables is an equally viable candidate as the extremal volume for a gravitational dual of complexity.

Quantum information in holographic duality

Bowen Chen et al.

Summary: In this paper, we provide a pedagogical review of the application of concepts from quantum information theory and gravitational theory in the anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence. We introduce various concepts and techniques, and aim to give researchers a working knowledge in this field for initiating original projects.

Quantum de Sitter horizon entropy from quasicanonical bulk, edge, sphere and topological string partition functions

Dionysios Anninos et al.

Summary: Motivated by the prospect of constraining microscopic models, this study calculates the exact one-loop corrected de Sitter entropy for every effective field theory of quantum gravity. It establishes a universal relationship between the sphere partition function and the quotient of a quasi-canonical bulk and a Euclidean edge partition function. The study also reveals the exponential landscape of de Sitter vacua and the connection between dS, AdS(+/-), and conformal results in generic higher-spin gravity. Holography is exhibited in quasi-exact bulk-edge cancellation.

The central dogma and cosmological horizons

Edgar Shaghoulian

Summary: This paper explores whether the central dogma of cosmological horizons has any support and proposes consistent answers with the quantum theory of de Sitter space, including a vanishing total entropy, an entropy of A/4G(N) on a single static patch, increasing entropy of a subregion as the region size grows, an island-like transition at half the horizon size, and a de Sitter version of the Hartman-Maldacena transition.

Sewing spacetime with Lorentzian threads: complexity and the emergence of time in quantum gravity

Juan F. Pedraza et al.

Summary: Holographic entanglement entropy has recently been reformulated as Lorentzian flows. By studying the nesting of Lorentzian flows, we have explored several properties of holographic complexity, including the lower bound of complexity rate and the optimization process of complexity. We have provided explicit geometric realizations of Lorentzian flows in AdS backgrounds and discussed their behavior near the singularity in a black hole interior. We have also proposed a refined notion of complexity and explained the significance of Lorentzian threads.

Holographic complexity and de Sitter space

Shira Chapman et al.

Summary: We computed the length of spacelike geodesics in certain double-sided flow geometries in two dimensions. The results showed that in geometries with black hole horizons, the geodesic length exhibits linear growth at late times, while in flow geometries with de Sitter horizons, geodesics with finite length only exist for short times and do not exhibit linear growth. These results have implications for understanding the holographic proposal for quantum complexity and the holographic nature of the de Sitter horizon.

Two dimensional nearly de Sitter gravity

Juan Maldacena et al.

Summary: This study focuses on aspects of the de Sitter version of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity, exploring the boundary mode's gravitational corrections to cosmological observables and examining contributions from different topologies. By computing no-boundary wavefunctions and probability measures, the research also highlights the dominance of two-dimensional nearly de Sitter gravity dynamics on certain observables.

Lorentzian Threads as Gatelines and Holographic Complexity

Juan F. Pedraza et al.

Summary: The passage discusses the reformulation of the complexity = volume conjecture using the continuous min flow-max cut principle and the nesting property, as well as the concept of optimizing with Lorentzian flows. It also introduces the concept of bounding the rate of complexity and capturing the role of suboptimal tensor networks.

Summary: The Goheer-Kleban-Susskind no-go theorem highlights the incompatibility between the symmetry of de Sitter space and finite entropy. Recent developments suggest that eternal de Sitter space, if it exists, may just be an ensemble average.

Holographic path-integral optimization

Jan Boruch et al.

Summary: This work elaborates on the holographic description of path-integral optimization using Hartle-Hawking wave functions in Anti-de Sitter spacetimes in conformal field theories. It argues that maximizing the Hartle-Hawking wave function is equivalent to the path-integral optimization procedure in CFT. The study shows that metrics maximizing gravity wave functions in particular holographic geometries precisely match those derived in the path-integral optimization procedure for their dual CFT states.
