The statistical mechanics of near-BPS black holes

Matthew Heydeman et al.

Summary: This paper computes the partition function of near-BPS black holes in supergravity and shows that the gravitational path integral can be reduced to that of a N = 4 supersymmetric extension of the Schwarzian theory. The results indicate that black holes in supergravity have a mass gap and a large extremal black hole degeneracy consistent with the Bekenstein-Hawking area.

Disc partition function of 2d R2 gravity from DWG matrix model

Vladimir Kazakov et al.

Summary: In this paper, we compute the sum over flat surfaces of disc topology with arbitrary number of conical singularities using the matrix model of dually weighted graphs. We specifically calculate the sum over quadrangulations of the disc with certain boundary conditions, which control the number of squares, length of the boundary, and coordination numbers of vertices. Our results interpolate between the 2d quantum gravity solution for the disc with fluctuating metric and almost flat surfaces with negative curvature concentrated on the boundary. We also speculate on studying the fluctuating 2d geometry with AdS(2) background instead of the flat one.

An effective matrix model for dynamical end of the world branes in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity

Ping Gao et al.

Summary: We study the dynamics of dynamical end of the world branes in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity in nearly AdS(2) spacetimes. By quantizing the theory and calculating the Euclidean path integral summation over topologies, including dynamical branes, we find a perfect match with a modified SSS matrix model. Resolving UV divergences in the gravitational instantons involving branes allows for a Wilsonian effective theory interpretation of the gravitational theory. By extending the integration contour of eigenvalues into the complex plane, we complete the nonperturbative version of the modified SSS matrix model and provide a new interpretation of other phases in such matrix models. Additionally, we derive an effective W(Phi) dilaton gravity with similar semiclassical physics, where the extremal entropy of a large number of flavors of branes counts the states of these branes.

Liouville quantum gravity - holography, JT and matrices

Thomas G. Mertens et al.

Summary: This research focuses on two-dimensional Liouville gravity and minimal string theory on spaces with fixed length boundaries. It investigates the gravitational dressing of bulk and boundary correlators in the disk and compares the results with a matrix model calculation for the (2, p) minimal string theory. Additionally, it explores the connection with a quantum deformation of SL(2,) and discusses the interpretation of the bulk theory as a 2D dilaton gravity model.

The path integral of 3D gravity near extremality; or, JT gravity with defects as a matrix integral

Henry Maxfield et al.

Summary: The proposal suggests including a new class of topologies in the path integral of three-dimensional pure gravity to address negative aspects in the spectrum, leading to a nonperturbative shift of the BTZ extremality bound. A two-dimensional calculation using dimensionally reduced theory can capture the primary effects in the near extremal limit, as demonstrated through a study of a related two-dimensional theory of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity with dynamic defects, which is shown to be equivalent to a matrix integral.

Quantum Gravity Microstates from Fredholm Determinants

Clifford V. Johnson

Summary: Various two dimensional quantum gravity theories of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) form can be described as random matrix models, providing explicit descriptions of microstate degrees of freedom. By using a Fredholm determinant det(1-K), the statistics of energy levels and quenched free energy F-Q (T) of the system can be computed. These results are also relevant to quantum properties of black holes in higher dimensions.

Solving puzzles in deformed JT gravity: phase transitions and non-perturbative effects

Clifford V. Johnson et al.

Summary: Recent work has shown that certain deformations of the scalar potential in Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity can be written as double-scaled matrix models. However, some of these deformations exhibit a breakdown of unitarity with negative spectral density. The source of the problem lies in the presence of a multi-valued solution of the leading order matrix model string equation, which leads to perturbative and non-perturbative inconsistencies in the theory.

Degenerate operators in JT and Liouville (super)gravity

Thomas G. Mertens

Summary: We provide explicit expressions for a specific subclass of JT gravity bilocal correlators, discuss the 1/C Schwarzian bilocal perturbation series and higher genus corrections, as well as extend the discussion to the N = 1 super JT model and super-Schwarzian perturbation series. Additionally, we show that JT supergravity saturates the chaos bound at first order in 1/C and develop fixed-length amplitudes of Liouville supergravity. Finally, we compute the minimal superstring fixed length boundary two-point functions and give comments on higher topology.

2D dilaton-gravity, deformations of the minimal string, and matrix models

Gustavo J. Turiaci et al.

Summary: A large class of two-dimensional dilaton-gravity theories in asymptotically AdS(2) spacetimes are holographically dual to a matrix integral, interpreted as an ensemble average over Hamiltonians. Extending this duality to include conical defects with small deficit angles, the theories are shown to be equal to the large p limit of a natural deformation of the (2, p) minimal string theory.

Jackiw-Teitelboim supergravity as a double-cut matrix model

Clifford Johnson et al.

Summary: The study focuses on a JT supergravity theory and demonstrates its connection to certain matrix models, offering a nonperturbative computation method. The theory is considered a combination of specific type 0B minimal string theories, and it is suggested that other JT supergravities may also be defined similarly.

Free energy from replica wormholes

Netta Engelhardt et al.

Summary: The text discusses the challenge of Euclidean wormholes to the standard quantum mechanical interpretation and suggests that gravitational path integral computes the ensemble average of multiple theories. It highlights the contribution of connected topologies to the free energy and evidence of replica symmetry breaking in both JT gravity and a simplified version of CGHS. The insights about ensemble averaging in gravity from this perspective are also discussed.

Explorations of nonperturbative Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and supergravity

Clifford Johnson

Summary: This article explores recently proposed definitions of JT gravity and supergravities, based on combinations of minimal string models, focusing on physics beyond perturbative expansion in spacetime topology. By using a combination of analytical and numerical methods, physics can be extracted with high accuracy in a simple controlled truncation scheme. Nonperturbative spectral densities are explicitly computed and displayed, including important contributions from wormhole geometries.
