Aging in COVID-19: Vulnerability, immunity and intervention

Yiyin Chen et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic originating from Wuhan in December 2019 has had far-reaching health and socioeconomic impacts worldwide. The disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 is highly heterogeneous, with age, gender, and comorbidities playing key roles in disease severity and outcomes. Aging and dysregulation of immune function are thought to contribute to the increased vulnerability of older adults to severe COVID-19. Further research on immune responses to SARS-CoV-2 infection, particularly in different age groups, is crucial for understanding disease heterogeneity and developing effective vaccines.

Estimated transmissibility and impact of SARS-CoV-2 lineage B.1.1.7 in England

Nicholas G. Davies et al.

Summary: A new variant of SARS-CoV-2 has emerged in England, with a higher reproduction number and potential for large resurgences of COVID-19 cases. Without stringent control measures, it is projected that COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in England for the first 6 months of 2021 will exceed those in 2020. The variant has spread globally and exhibited similar transmission increases in Denmark, Switzerland, and the United States.

The human virome: assembly, composition and host interactions

Guanxiang Liang et al.

Summary: The human body hosts vast numbers of different viruses, collectively termed the 'virome'. Research on the human virome has highlighted the assembly, composition, and dynamics of the virome as well as host-virome interactions in health and disease. Viral community states can be associated with adverse outcomes for the human host, while others are characteristic of health.

Cytomegalovirus and herpes simplex type 1 infections and immunological profile of community-dwelling older adults

Beatriz Prado Noronha et al.

Summary: The study identified a high prevalence of CMV and HSV-1 infections in older adults, with different chemokines associated with antibody titers for each infection. Higher concentrations of certain chemokines were linked to lower or higher antibody titers for CMV, while intermediate levels of other chemokines were associated with higher antibody titers for both CMV and HSV-1.
