Single-parent expression drives dynamic gene expression complementation in maize hybrids

Zhi Li et al.

Summary: Single-parent expression (SPE) refers to gene expression in only one of the two parents, either due to differential expression between parental alleles or the physical absence of a gene in one parent. This study found that SPE is common but highly genotype and tissue specific in maize inbreds and hybrids. The regulatory analysis showed that PAV SPE and non-PAV SPE genes are mainly regulated by cis effects, with a small portion under trans regulation, and polymorphic transposable element insertions contribute to high levels of cis regulation. Additionally, PAV SPE genes were more frequently expressed in hybrids than non-PAV SPE genes.

The importance of dominance and genotype-by-environment interactions on grain yield variation in a large-scale public cooperative maize experiment

Anna R. Rogers et al.

Summary: This study curated and analyzed genotypic and phenotypic data of 1918 maize hybrids, revealing relationships between additive and dominance genetic effects, genotype-by-environment interactions, and environmental factors. The results indicated that models involving both additive and dominance relationships best fit the data, and these models can be used for genomic prediction of hybrid performance across different environments.

Genomic variation within the maize stiff-stalk heterotic germplasm pool

Nolan Bornowski et al.

Summary: High-quality genome assemblies of maize stiff-stalk inbreds were created, revealing extensive collinearity among these inbreds and unique components in the maize pangenome. While representing only a proportion of variation in the original stiff-stalk pool, these inbreds showed significant genetic and genomic variation, supporting the potential for continued breeding success in this pool.

Mapping QTL for flowering time-related traits under three plant densities in maize

Liwei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, maize QTL associated with flowering time-related traits were identified, with the discovery that flowering time under different densities is regulated by complex pathways rather than a few major genes or independent pathways. The effects of some QTL varied with plant density, indicating the importance of understanding the genetic basis of flowering time in maize for breeding early-maturing varieties.
