Can N2O emissions offset the benefits from soil organic carbon storage?

Bertrand Guenet et al.

Summary: In order to meet the global warming targets set by the Paris Agreement, drastic reductions in greenhouse gas emissions are required alongside large-scale deployment of other climate mitigation strategies. Increasing soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is an important lever, but it must be considered that this may lead to increased nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, offsetting some of the climate benefits.

Adsorptive separation of toxic metals from aquatic environment using agro waste biochar: Application in electroplating industrial wastewater

R. Gayathri et al.

Summary: In this study, ultrasonic assisted jujube seeds (UAJS) treated with sulphuric acid were experimented as adsorbents for removing Zn(II) and Pb(II) contaminated water. Results show that UAJS has higher adsorption capacity and is effective in treating industrial wastewater containing metal ions.

Sustainable carbonaceous biochar adsorbents derived from agro-wastes and invasive plants for cation dye adsorption from water

X. Cuong Nguyen et al.

Summary: This study compared the adsorption of methyl orange dye by biochars produced from wattle bark, mimosa, and coffee husks, finding that mimosa biochar had the best adsorption efficiency. However, coffee husk biochar was not recommended for MO removal as it could cause water discoloration when used in excess.

Co-application of biochar and microorganisms improves soybean performance and remediate cadmium-contaminated soil

Fasih Ullah Haider et al.

Summary: The combined use of microorganisms and biochar has important synergistic effects not only on nutrient absorption but also on reducing soybean cadmium intake and improving soybean plant physiology in Cd-polluted soils compared to sole application of microorganisms or biochar.

A novel maize biochar-based compound fertilizer for immobilizing cadmium and improving soil quality and maize growth

Zhifan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel biochar-based compound fertilizer was synthesized and its effects on the immobilization of available cadmium, soil fertility and maize growth were investigated. Results showed that low doses of the compound fertilizer significantly reduced Cd availability in soil and improved soil fertility and maize growth. The increase of pyrolysis temperature enhanced the biochar adsorption capacity for Cd2+ and the modification of urea, diatomite, and triple superphosphate played a vital role in cadmium immobilization, soil improvement, and maize growth.

Co-application of biochar and nitrogen fertilizer reduced nitrogen losses from soil

Xiuwen Li et al.

Summary: The study showed that different types of biochar have varied effects on soil nitrogen management, with biochar high in CEC reducing nitrate concentration and biochar high in ash content reducing N2O emissions. When combined with urea, biochar with higher CEC decreased ammonification and nitrification rates, while biochar with higher ash content reduced N2O emissions.

Evaluation on soil fertility quality under biochar combined with nitrogen reduction

Xiaoqin Tian et al.

Summary: This study conducted a two-year consecutive field experiment in southwest China to investigate the effects of biochar and nitrogen reduction on soil fertility in purple soil. Through various analyses, it identified the main soil factors affecting rapeseed yield and determined the best combination of biochar and nitrogen for crop productivity and soil quality restoration in the region. The results provided a scientific basis for rational fertilization and management practices in purple soil areas of southwest China.
