High sensitivity of roots to salt stress as revealed by novel tip bioassay in wheat seedlings

Chiharu Nakamura et al.

Summary: This study revealed that roots are more sensitive to the growth-suppressing effect of salt compared to shoots in wheat seedlings. After exposure to varying concentrations of NaCl for 7 and 14 days, a significantly greater reduction in root length compared to shoot length was observed in all tested germplasms, indicating a higher sensitivity of roots to salt stress during early seedling stages.

Drought: Sensing, signalling, effects and tolerance in higher plants

Mohammad Mukarram et al.

Summary: Drought is a combination of multiple stressful conditions that disrupt osmotic and ionic balance in plants, leading to impacts on overall plant growth, development, and productivity. Plants have various defense mechanisms to mitigate the effects of drought, including stomatal adjustments, osmotic adjustments, antioxidant metabolism, and ion regulations, which can help alleviate the damage caused by water deficit.

Signaling Peptides Regulating Abiotic Stress Responses in Plants

Jin Sun Kim et al.

Summary: Plants, as sessile organisms, have evolved complex stress-responsive signaling pathways to regulate the expression of transcription factors and biosynthesis of osmolytes for tolerance. Signaling peptides, acting like phytohormones, control various aspects of plant growth and development through cell-cell communication networks. Recent studies have shown the importance of several signaling peptides in plant responses to abiotic stress.
