Abiotic stress responses in plants

Huiming Zhang et al.

Summary: Plants face abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, which greatly impact their distribution, growth, and crop productivity. Recent research has revealed the complex molecular mechanisms involved in plants' responses to these stresses, including sensing, signaling, transcription, translation, and post-translational modifications. This knowledge can be utilized to enhance crop resilience and sustainability through genetic, chemical, and microbial approaches.

Effect of chlorophyll biosynthesis-related genes on the leaf color in Hosta (Hosta plantaginea Aschers) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.)

Jingying Zhang et al.

Summary: Silencing of HrHEMA, HrPOR, and HrCAO genes led to leaf yellowing and chloroplast structure changes in Hosta, with HrCAO showing the most significant impact. Overexpression of these genes in tobacco resulted in enhanced photosynthesis by increasing chlorophyll content, with varying effects under different light intensities. Additionally, the levels of various enzymes and substances in transgenic tobacco plants changed significantly under different light intensities.

Genome-wide investigation and expression profiling of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) family genes uncover likely functions in organ development and stress responses in Populus trichocarpa

Fang He et al.

Summary: This study conducted a genome-wide analysis of the PPO gene family in Populus, identifying 18 PtrPPO genes and revealing their characteristics through analyses of gene structure, phylogeny, chromosomal localization, gene replication, cis-elements, and expression patterns. The study results indicate that the PtrPPO gene family plays a crucial role in stress responses and may have important implications for stress resistance in forest trees.

Genome-wide analysis of the apple CaCA superfamily reveals that MdCAX proteins are involved in the abiotic stress response as calcium transporters

Ke Mao et al.

Summary: The study identified 21 CaCA family proteins in apple for the first time, classified into four groups: CAX, CCX, NCL, and MHX. Expression analysis, collinearity analysis, and characterization of calcium transport capacity revealed a strong response to calcium and abiotic stress treatments, as well as a pair of segmental duplication genes MdCAX3L-1 and MdCAX3L-2 with significant differences in calcium transport capacity. Yeast two-hybrid assays demonstrated that these two proteins could interact with each other.

PdGNC confers drought tolerance by mediating stomatal closure resulting from NO and H2O2 production via the direct regulation of PdHXK1 expression in Populus

Chao Shen et al.

Summary: PdGNC regulates drought tolerance in poplar by reducing stomatal aperture through the direct activation of PdHXK1 gene expression. Increased hexokinase activity promotes NO and H2O2 production in guard cells, leading to decreased stomatal aperture and increased drought resistance.

Genome-Wide Investigation of the NF-X1 Gene Family in Populus trichocarpa Expression Profiles during Development and Stress

Fang He et al.

Summary: This study identified the PtrNF-X1 gene family in poplar through molecular biology and bioinformatics analysis, and investigated their gene structure, phylogeny, chromosomal localization, gene replication, Cis-elements, and expression patterns. The results showed that some genes in this family have the potential role in drought and hormone stress resistance, providing genetic resources for stress resistance research in poplar.

External application of nitrogen alleviates toxicity of cadmium on poplars via starch and sucrose metabolism

Fang He et al.

Summary: Phytoremediation technology can effectively mitigate heavy metal pollution in soil and water through the application of nitrogen, which helps reduce chlorophyll degradation and maintain ion stability in cells. Transcriptomic and phosphoproteomic analyses showed that additional nitrogen supplementation under cadmium stress could activate specific gene expressions and protein phosphorylation related to sugar and starch synthesis pathways, ultimately alleviating the damage caused by cadmium.

Towards spruce-type photosystem II: consequences of the loss of light-harvesting proteins LHCB3 and LHCB6 in Arabidopsis

Iva Ilikova et al.

Summary: The study examined the structure-function relationship of PSII supercomplexes in Arabidopsis mutants to explore the possibility of spruce-type PSII supercomplex formation in angiosperms. Unlike in spruce, both LHCB3 and LHCB6 were found to be necessary for stable binding of the M trimer to the PSII core in Arabidopsis. The formation of spruce-type PSII supercomplex was observed with low abundance only in Ihcb3 plants, suggesting a unique structural arrangement in this mutant.

An alternative splicing variant of PtRD26 delays leaf senescence by regulating multiple NAC transcription factors in Populus

Hou-Ling Wang et al.

Summary: Through RNA sequencing in poplar, researchers identified key transcription factors involved in autumn leaf senescence and discovered that a truncated protein can act as a dominant-negative regulator by interacting with core senescence-associated transcription factors. They proposed that age-dependent alternative splicing variants play a role in fine-tuning the molecular mechanisms that regulate leaf senescence in trees.

Phylogenetic and ion-response analyses reveal a relationship between gene expansion and functional divergence in the Ca2+/cation antiporter family in Angiosperms

Ye Zheng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the evolution of plant CaCA superfamily genes and their differential gene expression and function in ion response, showing a higher tendency for gene duplication retention, potentially resulting from whole-genome duplication events. It was found that genes with more highly differentiated expression patterns are more likely to be retained as duplicates and loss of these genes led to more severe growth deficiencies in Arabidopsis thaliana mutants. Salt-tolerant species tend to inherit conservative ion-response expression characteristics of their ancestral genes.
