A novel zinc transporter essential for Arabidopsis zinc and iron-dependent growth

Yaohui Wang et al.

Summary: This study identified a novel Golgi-localized protein named ZINC NUTRIENT ESSENTIAL1 (AtZNE1) in Arabidopsis, which plays a vital role in plant adaptation to excess zinc or iron deficiency. Disruption of AtZNE1 led to growth defects under excess zinc or iron deficiency conditions, highlighting its importance in the regulation of zinc and iron homeostasis.

Current understanding of plant zinc homeostasis regulation mechanisms

Ilya E. Zlobin

Summary: Regulation of plant Zn homeostasis is mainly accomplished at the transcriptional level, with local regulation based on transcription factors bZIP19 and bZIP23 sensing changes in cellular Zn concentrations. Other unidentified mechanisms for sensing cellular Zn concentrations likely exist, along with a shoot-derived systemic Zn deficiency signal and regulation of mRNA degradation of Zn homeostasis genes by changes in cellular Zn status.

Secretory lipid transfer protein OsLTPL94 acts as a target of EAT1 and is required for rice pollen wall development

Yang Tao et al.

Summary: This study identified a rice male-sterile mutant (l94) with defective pollen exine patterning and abnormal tapetal cell development, caused by a mutation in a gene encoding a type-G non-specific lipid transfer protein (OsLTPL94). Further investigations revealed that the transcription factor EAT1 activates OsLTPL94 expression, playing a key role in the coordinated development of tapetum and microspores.

Arabidopsis bZIP19 and bZIP23 act as zinc sensors to control plant zinc status

Grmay H. Lilay et al.

Summary: Zinc (Zn) is an essential micronutrient for plants and animals, but how plants sense zinc is poorly understood. Two Arabidopsis bZIP transcription factors previously shown to modulate plant responses to zinc deficiency are now identified as zinc sensors in this study.
