Genetic diversity assessed using PFGE, MLP and MLST in Candida spp. candidemia isolates obtained from a Brazilian hospital

Heliara Maria Spina Canela et al.

Summary: This study utilized various typing techniques to analyze the genetic relationships among Candida spp. bloodstream isolates, revealing high genetic variability in C. albicans and C. tropicalis isolates, and relatively low genetic variability in C. glabrata isolates. Additionally, a cluster of C. glabrata isolates was identified in a hospital unit.

Strain Distribution and Drug Susceptibility of Invasive Fungal Infection in Clinical Patients With Systemic Internal Diseases

Xuehua Zeng et al.

Summary: Patients with systemic internal diseases are at high risk for invasive fungal infections, which can increase morbidity and mortality. Identifying high-risk departments and susceptible systems can help reduce infection rates clinically. Correct selection of sensitive antifungal drugs is crucial for improving cure rates and reducing adverse reactions in these patients. The distribution of invasive fungal strains and drug choice in clinical practice should be regularly updated. The study found that patients in the respiratory department, ICU, and hepatology department have high rates of invasive fungal infections, with the respiratory, urinary, and gastrointestinal tracts being the most susceptible. Candida, especially C. albicans, is the main pathogen, and amphotericin B is recommended for treating non-Aspergillus fungi infections.

Deciphering the epidemiology of invasive candidiasis in the intensive care unit: is it possible?

Vasiliki Soulountsi et al.

Summary: In recent decades, invasive candidiasis (IC) has become a significant cause of morbidity, mortality, and economic burden in the intensive care unit (ICU). The epidemiology of IC remains a difficult and unsolved puzzle for the literature. IC burden estimation is challenging due to various definitions and limitations in case-finding methodologies. Candidemia and intra-abdominal candidiasis (IAC) are the predominant types of IC in the ICU, with an increasing incidence of candidemia, particularly in elderly or immunosuppressed patients, and a shift towards non-albicans species worldwide.

Genotyping, drug resistance and virulence factors of Candida species isolated from patients using long-term inhaled steroids

Nursel Dikmen et al.

Summary: In asthma patients using long-term inhaled steroids, the isolation rates of Candida species, drug resistance rates, and the presence of virulence genes were significantly higher in patients compared to the control group. This may be due to the suppression of cellular immunity by long-term steroid use.

Silver nanoparticles, a promising treatment against clinically important fluconazole-resistant Candida glabrata

R. M. Darwish et al.

Summary: The study found that silver nanoparticles enhance the antifungal ability of fluconazole, reduce the concentration of fluconazole, and provide a promising method for the treatment of Candida glabrata infections.

Molecular Epidemiology, Antifungal Susceptibility, and Virulence Evaluation of Candida Isolates Causing Invasive Infection in a Tertiary Care Teaching Hospital

Junzhu Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated invasive candidiasis in a tertiary care hospital in Nanchang City, China, focusing on the epidemiology, pathogenicity, and antifungal susceptibility of Candida strains. The results showed that Candida albicans and C. parapsilosis were sensitive to echinocandins, while C. glabrata showed resistance to this class of antifungals. Additionally, the virulence levels of Candida isolates did not correlate with their specimen sources or clusters.

Candida glabrata: Pathogenicity and Resistance Mechanisms for Adaptation and Survival

Yahaya Hassan et al.

Summary: Candida glabrata is an important pathogen that can survive and cause infections in patients using various virulence factors. Factors including adherence, evasion of immune defenses, production of hydrolytic enzymes contribute to infection initiation, as well as iron regulation and genetic mutations. Other factors such as biofilm production, stress tolerance, resistance to neutrophil killings, and development of drug resistance also play a role in the pathogenicity of C. glabrata.

Siriphan Boonsilp et al.

Summary: This study conducted in a tertiary-level hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, evaluated the prevalence, antifungal susceptibility, and molecular characteristics of Candida species causing bloodstream infections. The results showed variations in susceptibility to antifungal agents among different species, providing insights for optimizing treatment strategies.
