Fe(III)-mediated anaerobic ammonium oxidation: A novel microbial nitrogen cycle pathway and potential applications

Xin Tan et al.

Summary: Feammox is a novel pathway for ammonium (NH4 (+)) oxidation and nitrogen cycle, leading to significant loss of nitrogen in natural environments. Various Feammox pathways, end products, and interactions within microbial communities have been revealed by researchers, offering alternative processes for wastewater treatment. However, substantial variations exist among different studies in terms of key functional microorganisms.

Impacts of straw returning and N application on NH4+-N loss, microbially reducible Fe(III) and bacterial community composition in saline-alkaline paddy soils

Dongmei Liu et al.

Summary: In saline-alkaline paddy soils of the Yellow River Delta, proper straw returning and nitrogen fertilization can increase NH4+-N content, improve soil organic carbon content, promote dissolution of iron and the structure of bacterial communities, thereby reducing NH4+ oxidation and iron reduction through feammox reaction, and ultimately contribute to the sustainable development of modern agriculture in these soils.

Enhancing the nitrogen removal efficiency of a new autotrophic biological nitrogen-removal process based on the iron cycle: Feasibility, progress, and existing problems

Xiang Li et al.

Summary: Partial nitrification (PN)-Anammox is considered the optimal nitrogen removal process for municipal sewage, but NOB growth under low temperature and low-ammonium conditions leads to excessive NO3--N production. The cyclic utilization of Fe2+/Fe3+ in Feammox and NDAFO processes can achieve continuous conversion of NH4+-N and NO3--N without sludge mineralization. Coupling Feammox and NDAFO with Anammox enhances the conversion of NH4+-N to N-2.

Summary: Nanomolar concentrations of NH2OH in natural water sources were successfully determined using an Fe3+ oxidation method combined with gas chromatography. The method showed high efficiency and simplicity, with a detection limit of 0.2 mu gN L-1. It was applied to samples with different salinities, demonstrating its high adaptability. NH2OH was successfully detected in samples collected from the Hii River and Lakes Shinji and Nakaumi in Japan.

Coupling oxidation of acid volatile sulfide, ferrous iron, and ammonia nitrogen from black-odorous sediment via autotrophic denitrification-anammox by nitrate addition

Yingwen Mai et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that the simultaneous removal of AVS, ferrous iron, and ammonia nitrogen in black-odorous sediment can be achieved through autotrophic denitrification coupled with anammox using nitrate addition. The presence of nitrite accumulation indicated partial denitrification during the process. Microbes related to autotrophic denitrification and anammox bacteria were detected in all systems, confirming the effectiveness of the method.

Using Fe(II)/Fe(III) as catalyst to drive a novel anammox process with no need of anammox bacteria

Yafei Yang et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the occurrence of a novel 'anammox' process in the absence of anammox bacteria, driven by NO-induced Fe(II) oxidation and NH-induced Fe(III) reduction (Feammox) in an anaerobic sludge system. The results showed that Fe(II) was anaerobically oxidized to Fe(III) with the addition of NO2-, leading to significant nitrogen removal. XRD and XPS analysis indicated the production of FeOOH from chemical Fe(II) oxidation with NO2-. Additionally, the isotope experiment confirmed the participation of induced Fe(II) oxidation in Feammox for nitrogen removal.

Denitrification potential of sodium alginate gel beads immobilized iron-carbon, Zoogloea sp. L2, and riboflavin: Performance optimization and mechanism

Liang Xu et al.

Summary: A gel bead loaded with iron-carbon powder, Zoogloea sp. L2, and riboflavin was prepared through cross-linking of sodium alginate to establish an immobilized bioreactor. Addition of riboflavin as a redox mediator promoted denitrification, achieving high nitrate removal efficiency under optimal conditions. Analysis techniques such as FTIR, EEM, XRD, and GC showed excellent immobilization and denitrification of the bioreactor, with Zoogloea playing a crucial role in nitrate removal.

Inhibition effects of long-term calcium-magnesia phosphate fertilizer application on Cd uptake in rice: Regulation of the iron-nitrogen coupling cycle driven by the soil microbial community

Changrong Wang et al.

Summary: Field experiments showed that calcium-magnesium-phosphate (CMP) fertilizer effectively inhibited cadmium (Cd) uptake in rice, leading to a significant decrease in Cd content in rice grains. The application of CMP fertilizer also increased soil pH, total calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus contents, resulting in a further reduction in soil available Cd content. Additionally, CMP fertilizer application affected the soil Fe-N cycle and promoted specific bacterial community activities, ultimately benefiting the remediation of Cd-contaminated paddy soil.

Reactions of nitrite with goethite and surface Fe(II)-goethite complexes

P. Dhakal et al.

Summary: Chemodenitrification, the abiotic reduction of nitrite by iron (II), is an important process in nitrogen cycling due to its source of nitrous oxide production. This study investigated the reactivity of nitrite with goethite and Fe(II)-treated goethite under anoxic conditions. The results showed that nitrite removal by goethite was faster at pH 5.5 and involved a combination of sorption and reduction processes when high aqueous Fe(II) was present. The formation of a surface complex resembling protonated nitrite was observed with implications for nitrogen cycling and release of atmospheric pollutants.
