Helical inchworming: a novel translocation mechanism for a ring ATPase

Alexander B. Tong et al.

Summary: Ring ATPases play various roles in cells, involving complex communication and coordination among subunits. Of particular interest are translocases, which combine chemical and mechanical actions in their operation. A novel translocation mechanism has been discovered for the DNA packaging motor of bacteriophage & phi;29 through single-molecule optical tweezers and single-particle cryo-electron microscopy.
