The bacterial community of the lone star tick (Amblyomma americanum)

L. Paulina Maldonado-Ruiz et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the bacterial community of adult A. americanum ticks collected in eastern Kansas. The majority of ticks had no culturable bacteria, and those with culturable bacteria mainly carried endosymbiotic genera such as Coxiella and Rickettsia. High throughput sequencing revealed a poor midgut bacterial community in A. americanum ticks, dominated by endosymbiotic bacteria.

Borrelia burgdorferi infection modifies protein content in saliva of Ixodes scapularis nymphs

Tae Kwon Kim et al.

Summary: The study identified tick saliva proteins associated with B. burgdorferi transmission, revealing that infected ticks secreted more proteins than uninfected ticks, with antimicrobial peptides being suppressed. Rabbits exposed to infected ticks developed potent immunity, possibly due to higher expression levels of immunogenic proteins. The data provides important insights for discovering effective antigens for a LD vaccine.

Symbiont-regulated serotonin biosynthesis modulates tick feeding activity

Zhengwei Zhong et al.

Summary: The reduced abundance of the symbiont Coxiella decreases blood intake in Haemaphysalis longicornis ticks, and providing specific nutrients can restore the feeding defect. This is due to the increased biosynthesis of serotonin (5-HT) as a result of the symbiont's effect, promoting tick feeding behavior.

Growth Dynamics and Antibiotic Elimination of Symbiotic Rickettsia buchneri in the Tick Ixodes scapularis (Atari: Ixodidae)

Jonathan D. Oliver et al.

Summary: This study describes the growth of symbiotic Rickettsia buchneri in Ixodes scapularis ticks throughout their life cycle and provides methods for eliminating R. buchneri from the ticks using ciprofloxacin antibiotics through injection or membrane feeding. These methods were effective in clearing the bacteria from most offspring of exposed females.
