Integrated analysis of the faecal metagenome and serum metabolome reveals the role of gut microbiome-associated metabolites in the detection of colorectal cancer and adenoma

Feng Chen et al.

Summary: By integrating untargeted serum metabolomics and metagenome sequencing, this study identified 8 gut microbiome-associated serum metabolites that accurately distinguished CRC and adenoma. The model based on these metabolites showed high diagnostic accuracy for CRC and adenoma, outperforming traditional clinical markers like carcinoembryonic antigen. This suggests that gut microbiome-associated metabolites have potential applications in detecting CRC and adenoma.

Rising incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer - a call to action

Naohiko Akimoto et al.

Summary: The global incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer is on the rise, potentially due to factors such as diet, obesity, lack of exercise, and antibiotic use. Early-onset CRC differs clinically, pathologically, and molecularly from later-onset CRC. Further research spanning childhood and young adulthood is necessary to enhance understanding and management of this disease.

Association between Brachyspira and irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea

Karolina S. Jabbar et al.

Summary: The study found potentially pathogenic Brachyspira species in a subset of patients with IBS, with a significantly higher prevalence of Brachyspira colonization in IBS patients compared to healthy volunteers, especially in IBS-D patients. Brachyspira colonization was associated with accelerated oro-anal transit, mild mucosal inflammation, mast cell activation, and alterations of molecular pathways linked to bacterial uptake and ion-fluid homeostasis.
