Antimicrobial resistance in Aeromonas species isolated from aquatic environments in Brazil

D. Conte et al.

Summary: The study identified untreated healthcare effluents, presence of antimicrobials in the environment, and multidrug-resistant Aeromonas sp. as potential factors for the spread of resistance, posing a threat to public health.

Biological characteristics of enteropathogenic Aeromonas species isolated from different Egyptian foods

Rania M. Ahmed et al.

Summary: A study in Sharkia Governorate, Egypt found a high prevalence of Aeromonas spp. in food samples, particularly in raw milk and Nile tilapia. Different Aeromonas species were isolated from various samples, showing a variety of extracellular virulence factors and the presence of enterotoxins, posing a significant health risk for those consuming raw or improperly cooked food in Egypt.

Prevalence and hazardous impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products and antibiotics in environment: A review on emerging contaminants

Preeti Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency caused by the unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products. The presence of various organic compounds in the environment, including antibiotics and antimicrobial agents, poses serious health risks to humans. Research needs to focus on discussing the sources of antibiotic resistance and the ecotoxicity risks in the environment.

The prevalence, putative virulence genes and antibiotic resistance profiles of Aeromonas spp. isolated from cultured freshwater fishes in peninsular Malaysia

Mohamad Azzam-Sayuti et al.

Summary: The study characterized a large collection of Aeromonas species from fish farms in Peninsular Malaysia, identifying A. dhakensis as the predominant species. Half of the isolates carried at least half of the virulence genes tested and displayed resistance to multiple antibiotics, highlighting the need for vigilance in the freshwater fish industry.

Colistin Resistance in Aeromonas spp.

Luis Uriel Gonzalez-Avila et al.

Summary: The increased use of antimicrobials like colistin has led to the emergence of colistin-resistant Aeromonas strains. These strains have been found not only in clinical settings, but also in environmental and animal isolates, identified by detection of mcr genes. Different mcr variants have been detected in Aeromonas from various sources, including animals, environments, and human samples. This article provides an overview of colistin resistance in Aeromonas, along with general characteristics of the molecule and recommended methods for determining colistin resistance in certain Aeromonas species.

Summary: This article discusses the sources, spatial patterns, driving factors, and environmental implications of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in global estuarine and coastal environments. Pollution due to antibiotics is higher in low- and middle-income countries than in high-income countries, and ARGs show remarkable latitudinal variations.

Summary: This retrospective cohort study in a tertiary hospital in southern China found that inappropriate empirical antibiotic treatment for urinary tract infections caused by E. coli was associated with longer hospital length of stay. Empirical use of fluoroquinolones for UTIs should be avoided to reduce healthcare costs and bacterial resistance.

Summary: The study found low carbapenem resistance in P. aeruginosa and Acinetobacter species in our setting, showing that imipenem still has high efficacy against these bacteria. Strengthening antimicrobial surveillance/stewardship and infection control at UTH is essential for reducing hospital-acquired infections and improving patient outcomes.
