Neuroendocrine Determinants of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Anna Szeliga et al.

Summary: PCOS, the most common endocrine disorder in women, is diagnosed based on the presence of two out of three clinical symptoms and is mainly regulated by neurohormones like GnRH. Studies have shown abnormalities in neuroendocrine regulation in PCOS patients, including rapid GnRH pulse frequency and elevated kisspeptin levels.

A narrative review of the role of gastrointestinal dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome

Jim Parker et al.

Summary: Diet-induced gastrointestinal dysbiosis may play a significant role in stimulating increased gastrointestinal permeability and systemic inflammation in women with PCOS. Studies have found dysbiosis in most women with PCOS, and preliminary research suggests the involvement of certain substances in the pathophysiological mechanisms of increased intestinal permeability. Treatment with prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics appears to have beneficial effects on metabolic and biochemical profiles in PCOS.

Association of metabolic and inflammatory markers with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS): an update

Subeka Abraham Gnanadass et al.

Summary: Inflammatory markers play a significant role in regulating ovarian function, and any disturbances in their levels can lead to ovarian dysfunction. The association between inflammatory markers and PCOS pathogenesis implies that inflammation is one of the most potent risk factors for PCOS.

MIF-mediated NF-KB signaling pathway regulates the pathogenesis of polycystic ovary syndrome in rats

Zhenlin He et al.

Summary: In rats with PCOS, testosterone increased levels of MIF and LH while inhibiting FSH levels; MIF antibody could alleviate PCOS progression to a certain extent. Testosterone also promoted the expression of inflammatory cytokines, which was reversed by the MIF antibody. This study suggests that increased MIF levels activate the NF-κB pathway in ovaries, leading to inflammation and relevant inflammatory indicators in PCOS pathogenesis.

Clostridioides difficile exploits toxin-mediated inflammation to alter the host nutritional landscape and exclude competitors from the gut microbiota

Joshua R. Fletcher et al.

Summary: Through the analysis of tcdR mutants in two strains of Clostridioides difficile and omics, this study found that toxin-induced inflammation significantly alters the metabolism pathways of C. difficile and the gut microbiota. The host cell gene expression characteristics promote the in vivo growth of C. difficile. Furthermore, inflammation induced by C. difficile toxin activity excludes Bacteroides genus members that can utilize essential nutrients released from collagen degradation.

Effects of Soy Isoflavones, Resistant Starch and Antibiotics on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)-Like Features in Letrozole-Treated Rats

Geethika S. G. Liyanage et al.

Summary: The study suggests that soy isoflavone metabolites and resistant starch, along with gut microbiota modulations, can reduce the severity of PCOS reproductive features and increase the expression of gut barrier markers and butyric acid. Resistant starch intake can elevate the concentration of butyric acid, but is positively correlated with menstrual irregularity.

Shaoyao-Gancao Decoction Ameliorates the Inflammation State in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Rats via Remodeling Gut Microbiota and Suppressing the TLR4/NF-κB Pathway

Zhuang-peng Chang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Shaoyao-Gancao Decoction treatment could effectively improve various aspects of PCOS in rats, such as reducing body weight, regulating hormone levels, and ameliorating ovarian pathology. Additionally, it was found that the treatment decreased the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, enhanced tight junction protein expression, prevented LPS translocation, and reshaped the gut microbiota in PCOS rats. Moreover, the decoction also suppressed key genes and proteins related to the TLR4/NF-kappa B signaling pathway.

Androgen-induced gut dysbiosis disrupts glucolipid metabolism and endocrinal functions in polycystic ovary syndrome

Qixin Han et al.

Summary: This study indicates that androgen-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis may exacerbate metabolic and endocrinal dysfunction in PCOS. Experimental results show that even with the elimination of gut microbiota, DHEA-treated rats still exhibit PCOS phenotypes. Transplantation of gut microbiota triggers disturbances in hepatic glucolipid metabolism and reproductive hormone imbalance.

Effect of High-Fat Diet on the Intestinal Flora in Letrozole-Induced Polycystic Ovary Syndrome Rats

Yan-Hua Zheng et al.

Summary: This study found that high-fat diets could disrupt the balance of intestinal flora and exacerbate intestinal flora dysbiosis in PCOS patients. Letrozole-induced rats fed with high-fat diets exhibited many characteristics similar to human PCOS, including some metabolic disorders and intestinal flora dysbiosis. The dysbiosis was characterized by an increased Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, an expansion of Firmicutes, a contraction of Bacteroidetes, and decreased microbial richness.

Gut microbiome alterations in high-fat-diet-fed mice are associated with antibiotic tolerance

Yuan Liu et al.

Summary: A high-fat diet reduces antibiotic efficacy in a mouse model by altering the gut microbiota and decreasing the levels of indole-3-acetic acid, potentially converting tolerant bacterial cells into susceptible metabolically active cells. The antagonistic effect of a high-fat diet on antibiotic treatment is associated with changes in gut microbiota and the production of indole-3-acetic acid.
