Role of stress in the development of rheumatoid arthritis: a case-control study

Vincent Germain et al.

Summary: The primary objective of the study was to assess the stressful life events preceding the onset of symptoms in RA patients. It was found that patients with early RA reported more life events in the year preceding the onset of symptoms compared to controls, with a significant association between cumulative stress and RA only observed in women.

Early-Life Adversity Leaves Its Imprint on the Oral Microbiome for More Than 20 Years and Is Associated with Long-Term Immune Changes

Eleftheria G. Charalambous et al.

Summary: Research suggests that early-life adversity leaves a lasting imprint on the oral microbiome, impacting the activation, maturation, and senescence of the immune system. These effects are associated with prior herpesviridae exposure and current smoking status.

Dysbiosis From a Microbial and Host Perspective Relative to Oral Health and Disease

Carla Cugini et al.

Summary: Microbiology and immunology have gained significant attention in the study of caries and periodontal disease over the past 60 years, with experiments showing the relevance of bacteria in oral infections. Research has shifted from downplaying the role of bacteria in oral disease to recognizing them as true pathogens, and now proposes that bacteria play a key role in training the immune system and defending against foreign invaders. Advanced omics technologies are being used to better understand changes in the host and microbiome in oral disease, shaping the detection of quantifiable biomarkers to define human physiology and pathologies.

Differences in the Oral Microbiome in Patients With Early Rheumatoid Arthritis and Individuals at Risk of Rheumatoid Arthritis Compared to Healthy Individuals

Johanna M. Kroese et al.

Summary: The study found similarities in the oral microbiome between patients with early RA and individuals at risk of developing RA, as both groups showed an increased relative abundance of potentially proinflammatory species compared to healthy controls. These findings suggest a possible association between the oral microbiome and the onset of RA.

Circulating and Synovial Pentraxin-3 (PTX3) Expression Levels Correlate With Rheumatoid Arthritis Severity and Tissue Infiltration Independently of Conventional Treatments Response

Marie-Astrid Boutet et al.

Summary: The study found that circulating levels of PTX3 are associated with disease activity and structural damages in early RA patients, while synovial PTX3 is linked to immune cell infiltration and ectopic lymphoid structures in the joint. High levels of PTX3 in the synovium and peripheral blood are associated with chronic inflammation typical of RA, with further mechanistic links requiring additional research.

Perspectives on long pentraxin 3 and rheumatoid arthritis: several potential breakthrough points relying on study foundation of the past

Cheng Qiu et al.

Summary: PTX3, a typical long pentraxin protein, plays a predominant role in infection, inflammation, immunity, and tumor, and has been closely associated with the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The focus of the exploration into the relationship between PTX3 and RA lies in the associated cell types and cytokines involved in RA.

Local and systemic mechanisms linking periodontal disease and inflammatory comorbidities

George Hajishengallis et al.

Summary: Periodontitis is causally linked to the development of other chronic inflammatory diseases outside the oral mucosa, and intervention studies have shown that local treatment of periodontitis can ameliorate surrogate markers of comorbid conditions. Experimental animal studies have further strengthened the potential causal link by establishing biologically plausible and clinically consistent mechanisms. Understanding the impact of disseminated periodontal pathogens and systemic inflammation associated with periodontitis on extra-oral pathologies may lead to new therapeutic options to reduce the risk of periodontitis-associated comorbidities.
