Antimicrobial resistance in paediatric Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates amid global implementation of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines: a systematic review and meta-regression analysis

Kristin Andrejko et al.

Summary: This study reviewed antimicrobial susceptibility studies of pediatric pneumococcal isolates from 2000 to 2020, finding significant reductions in non-susceptibility of pneumococci to penicillin, sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, and third-generation cephalosporins after implementation of PCV products. The findings suggest that PCV implementation has led to decreased resistance of pneumococci to first-line antibiotic treatments for pneumonia.

Invasive pneumococcal disease burden in hospitalized adults in Bogota, Colombia

Paula O. Narvaez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the burden of Streptococcus pneumoniae (Spn), serotype distribution, and clinical characteristics of adults hospitalized due to invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in Colombia from 2012 to 2019. It found that pneumonia was the leading cause of IPD, with serotypes 19A and 3 being the most common. The mortality rate for adults with IPD remains high.

Impact of Pneumococcal Vaccination in the Nasopharyngeal Carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae in Healthy Children of the Murcia Region in Spain

Santiago Alfayate Miguelez et al.

Summary: The study found that PCV13 vaccine played a significant role in reducing carriage of vaccine serotypes, but non-vaccine serotypes were more common, and high resistance rates to certain antibiotics were observed.

Impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on invasive pneumococcal disease in children under 5 years of age in the Czech Republic

Jana Kozakova et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the impact of PCV vaccination on the incidence of IPD in children under 5 years old in the Czech Republic. Results showed a significant decrease in IPD incidence after PCV vaccination, but ongoing surveillance is important to monitor for potential serotype replacement.

Genomic surveillance of invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates in the period pre-PCV10 and post-PCV10 introduction in Brazil

Samanta C. G. Almeida et al.

Summary: After the introduction of PCV10 in Brazil in 2010, non-vaccine serotypes 3 and 19A were most common in the <5 years age group, while serotypes 12F, 8, and 9 N predominated in the >=5 years age group. The study identified various global and Brazilian pneumococcal sequence clusters, with changes observed in antimicrobial resistance profiles following PCV10 introduction.

Invasive pneumococcal disease in Canada 2010-2017: The role of current and next-generation higher-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines

Stephane B. Dion et al.

Summary: Research in Canada showed that publicly funded pneumococcal vaccine PCV13 significantly reduced IPD cases, but there are still substantial proportions of PCV13-serotype IPD cases in all age groups, indicating limitations to indirect protection provided by the pediatric PCV13 program. Higher-valent PCVs have the potential to address a substantial proportion of remaining IPD cases among all age groups.

Antimicrobial resistance profile and multidrug resistance patterns of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates from patients suspected of pneumococcal infections in Ethiopia

Bekele Sharew et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the antimicrobial resistance profiles and multidrug resistance patterns of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates from patients suspected of pneumococcal infections in Ethiopia. Most isolates were susceptible to ceftriaxone and cefotaxime, but resistance to commonly used antibiotics including penicillin was observed, indicating the need for periodic monitoring to select appropriate empirical treatments for better management of pneumococcal infection.

Multicentric Analysis of Erythromycin Resistance Determinants in Invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae; Associated Serotypes and Sequence Types in India

Rosemol Varghese et al.

Summary: This study conducted molecular characterization of erythromycin-resistant invasive pneumococcal isolates in India, identifying mef(A/E) and erm(B) genes as the major resistance determinants. Mutations in 23S rRNA were not associated with erythromycin resistance. The predominant serotypes were 19F, 14, and 23F.

Nasopharyngeal pneumococcal carriage in South Asian infants: Results of observational cohort studies in vaccinated and unvaccinated populations

Aditi Apte et al.

Summary: This study found that South Asian infants get colonised with pneumococci early in infancy, with the Indian cohort predominantly carrying vaccine serotypes in a PCV naive population, while the Bangladeshi cohort mainly carrying non-vaccine serotypes in a vaccinated population. These local findings are important for informing public health policy and developing higher valent pneumococcal vaccines.
