Root Canal Microbiome Associated With Asymptomatic Apical Periodontitis as Determined by High-Throughput Sequencing

Rodrigo Rodrigues Amaral et al.

Summary: This study used high-throughput sequencing technology to analyze the endodontic microbiome of teeth with asymptomatic apical periodontitis. The results revealed a high bacterial diversity and species composition variability among root canal samples. Large lesions showed a higher number of species but did not significantly differ from small lesions in bacterial diversity.

The oral microbiome and inflammation in mild cognitive impairment

Irene Yang et al.

Summary: The study revealed a link between the oral microbiome and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), aiding in the diagnosis of MCI. Two taxa, Pasteurellacae and Lautropia mirabilis, were identified to be differentially abundant in the two groups. Although systemic inflammatory markers did not differentiate the groups, differences in cerebrospinal fluid inflammatory mediators were associated with MCI.

Periodontology and pregnancy: An overview of biomedical and epidemiological evidence

Karen Raju et al.

Summary: During pregnancy, women are more susceptible to developing gingival problems, which may lead to adverse outcomes for both mother and infant. The increase in gingival inflammation caused by hormonal changes in pregnant women has been studied since the 1960s, but the relationship between periodontal disease during pregnancy and adverse pregnancy outcomes is still controversial.

Subgingival Microbiota during Healthy Pregnancy and Pregnancy Gingivitis

P. Balan et al.

Summary: The study compared the oral microbiome of pregnant women without gingivitis (healthy pregnancy) with those having gingivitis and nonpregnant healthy women. The results show that pathogenic bacteria may play a role in initiating disease development, but the progression to gingivitis may be influenced by environmental factors. Efforts are needed to plan interventions for sustaining health before the appearance of overt gingivitis.
