Fast odour dynamics are encoded in the olfactory system and guide behaviour

Tobias Ackels et al.

Summary: Researchers have found that the mammalian olfactory system can extract information about the environment using the temporal structure in odours. Mice in experiments were able to discriminate temporal correlations of rapidly fluctuating odours, and this information could be extracted from the activity of mitral and tufted cells.

The structural basis of odorant recognition in insect olfactory receptors

Josefina del Marmol et al.

Summary: Olfactory systems use a common strategy of combinatorial activation of olfactory receptors to detect a vast chemical world. The olfactory receptor MhOR5 from the jumping bristletail is a homotetrameric odorant-gated ion channel with broad chemical tuning, recognizing odorants through distributed hydrophobic interactions in a simple binding pocket. The receptor's sensitivity to odorants can be predictably altered by mutating individual residues in the binding pocket, shedding light on the molecular recognition mechanisms of the olfactory system.

Eliminating accidental deviations to minimize generalization error and maximize replicability: Applications in connectomics and genomics

Eric W. Bridgeford et al.

Summary: This article emphasizes the importance of replicability in scientific research and the inadequacy of existing replicability statistics. It introduces a new statistic called discriminability and proves that optimizing discriminability can improve the performance of subsequent inference tasks. The suggestion is to design experiments and analyses to optimize discriminability as a crucial step in solving the replicability crisis and mitigating accidental measurement error.
