Community leaf dry matter content predicts plant production in simple and diverse grassland

H. Wayne Polley et al.

Summary: Plant growth is associated with values of collinear traits from the leaf economics spectrum. Environmental variation and differences in community composition may affect the contributions of these traits to plant production. We tested the effects of interannual variation in precipitation and differences in grassland community composition on trait-based predictions of aboveground net primary production (ANP). Results showed that mean trends could be predicted using community-scale values of leaf dry matter content (LDMC), but precipitation and community effects influenced the production-trait relationships.

Relationship between relative growth rate and C:N:P stoichiometry for the marsh herbaceous plants under water-level stress conditions

Weizhen Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that with increasing flooding stress, the relative growth rate and root mass ratio of marsh herbaceous plants decreased, while above-ground biomass allocation increased. The change in nitrogen content was much greater than that of phosphorus, leading to variations in N:P ratios mainly determined by nitrogen concentration. The relationship between growth rate and nitrogen concentration was positively correlated for stem and total biomass, but negatively correlated for leaf and root organs.
