Heavy metal pollution increases CH4 and decreases CO2 emissions due to soil microbial changes in a mangrove wetland: Microcosm experiment and field examination

Jiaojiao Ma et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution leads to decreased richness and diversity of overall soil microbial communities in mangrove wetlands, but does not inhibit the activities of methanogenic communities. The presence of heavy metals increases CH4 emissions while decreasing CO2 emissions.

Microbial community dynamics behind major release of methane in constructed wetlands

Giuditta Bonetti et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands in urban environments are commonly used to treat pollutants, but they can also be significant sources of greenhouse gas emissions, particularly ebullitive methane. This study found that ebullitive emissions, in addition to diffusive emissions, contribute to a higher Global Warming Potential than previously estimated, indicating the importance of accurately measuring and accounting for all sources of greenhouse gas emissions from constructed wetlands.

Improved ecological monitoring for urban ecosystem protection in China

Min Wang et al.

Summary: Ecological monitoring is recognized as an important scientific topic that can provide essential data for ecosystem assessment to address sustainability issues. The Ecological Redline Policy in China requires strict monitoring to understand its effects on ecosystem services regulation. A transdisciplinary framework was developed in this study to establish an ecological redline monitoring network in Shanghai metropolitan area.

Stimulation of soil microbial functioning by elevated CO2 may surpass effects mediated by irrigation in a semiarid grassland

Hao Yu et al.

Summary: This study found that eCO2 and irrigation treatments significantly impacted the functional composition and structure of soil microbial communities, leading to increased functional diversity and stimulation of key functional genes involved in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur cycling in the soil.

A conceptual framework for urban ecological restoration and rehabilitation

Valentin H. Klaus et al.

Summary: Urban greenspace has gained attention due to its relevance to wildlife conservation, human welfare, and climate change. Biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation worldwide necessitate new concepts of ecological restoration. Urban ecosystems are often highly modified, lacking natural reference systems, hindering the implementation of ecological restoration in cities.

Evaluation of chloride contributions from major point and nonpoint sources in a northern US state

Alycia Overbo et al.

Summary: Chloride pollution of groundwater and surface water is a major concern in many regions, with road salt, wastewater discharge, and fertilizer use identified as significant sources of chloride loading. A statewide chloride budget in Minnesota found that water softeners contribute a substantial amount of chloride to wastewater treatment plants, with road salt remaining the largest source of chloride to the environment. The analysis methods used could be applied to other areas with similar conditions to identify and characterize chloride sources.

Land use in urban areas impacts the composition of soil bacterial communities involved in nitrogen cycling. A case study from Lefkosia (Nicosia) Cyprus

Coralea Stephanou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of land use and soil lithology on bacterial community composition and functional guilds in urban and peri-urban areas. Agricultural sites showed the highest bacterial diversity, while industrial and schoolyard sites were influenced by heavy metals such as Co, Pb, V, and Al. Variance partitioning analysis indicated that land use management, chemical elements, and sampling location explained a portion of bacterial community variation.

Toward a Generalizable Framework of Disturbance Ecology Through Crowdsourced Science

Emily B. Graham et al.

Summary: Disturbances cause fundamental changes in ecosystem functions, but there is a lack of unified foundation for discussing and quantifying the complexity of disturbances across interdisciplinary perspectives. By identifying a key limitation in disturbance ecology, researchers have developed a generalizable framework to understand disturbances and their impacts, which can be supplemented by discipline-specific variables to benefit both inter- and intra-disciplinary research. This framework provides a baseline standard for comparing disturbances across different fields and encourages explicit definition of disturbance drivers and impacts to support future syntheses and meta-analyses of disturbance research.

Distinct microbial communities alter litter decomposition rates in a fertilized coastal plain wetland

Megan E. Koceja et al.

Summary: This study found that long-term fertilization and dry hydrologic conditions affect bacterial diversity, decomposition rates, and increase the potential for soil C loss. Bacterial communities decomposed high C:N ratio litter more quickly in fertilized soils, especially under drier conditions, while decomposition rates of low C:N ratio litter were similar between fertilized and unfertilized soils.

Global homogenization of the structure and function in the soil microbiome of urban greenspaces

Manuel Delgado-Baquerizo et al.

Summary: The structure and function of soil microbiomes in urban greenspaces are largely uniform worldwide. Urban soils contain a higher proportion of fast-growing microbes and lower levels of ectomycorrhizal fungi compared to natural ecosystems. City affluence, management practices, and climate are key factors influencing urban soil communities.
