Utilizing causal diagrams across quasi-experimental approaches

Suchinta Arif et al.

Summary: Recent developments in computer science have advanced the use of causal inference and causal diagrams in observational studies, providing a unified approach to variable selection across different methodologies. This paper demonstrates how causal diagrams can be extended to ensure proper study design under quasi-experimental settings and highlights the importance of routinely applying causal diagrams in ecology research.

Evaluating Impact Using Time-Series Data

Hannah S. Wauchope et al.

Summary: Human impact on the environment is growing, with increasing strategies to conserve biodiversity. However, there is still a lack of understanding on how interventions affect ecological and conservation outcomes, especially in the analysis of time series data. A standardized framework is needed to robustly assess the impacts of interventions on ecological time series.

Confounding and regression adjustment in difference-in-differences studies

Bret Zeldow et al.

Summary: In difference-in-difference studies, confounders are covariates that change differently over time in the treatment and comparison group, or have a time-varying effect on the outcome. Adjusting for these confounders appropriately, including them in a regression model consistent with the causal model, can provide unbiased estimates. However, recovering an unbiased causal effect using difference-in-differences becomes difficult when time-varying confounders are affected by treatment.
