Relationship between physical activity, healthy lifestyle and COVID-19 disease severity; a cross-sectional study

Zahra Tavakol et al.

Summary: This study assessed the risk factors in COVID-19 patients and found that lower physical activity levels and unhealthy dietary patterns were associated with increased disease severity. The results suggest that increasing physical activity and improving dietary habits may help reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms.

6-month consequences of COVID-19 in patients discharged from hospital: a cohort study (Publication with Expression of Concern. See vol. 401, pg. 90, 2023)

Chaolin Huang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the long-term health consequences of discharged COVID-19 patients and associated risk factors, particularly disease severity. Patients with more severe illness during hospitalization showed more severe impaired pulmonary diffusion capacities and abnormal chest imaging manifestations, highlighting the need for targeted interventions for long-term recovery.

Respiratory and Psychophysical Sequelae Among Patients With COVID-19 Four Months After Hospital Discharge

Mattia Bellan et al.

Summary: The study examined the prevalence of lung function, exercise function, and psychological sequelae among survivors of severe COVID-19 four months after discharge. Over half of patients experienced reduced lung capacity, one-fifth had functional impairment, and about one-fifth showed symptoms of posttraumatic stress. These findings suggest that a significant proportion of COVID-19 survivors may continue to experience respiratory, functional, or psychological issues months after hospital discharge.

Physical inactivity is associated with a higher risk for severe COVID-19 outcomes: a study in 48 440 adult patients

Robert Sallis et al.

Summary: A study found that COVID-19 patients who were consistently inactive had a higher risk of severe outcomes, while patients consistently meeting physical activity guidelines had a lower risk of hospitalization, ICU admission, and death related to COVID-19. This suggests that physical activity plays a positive role in reducing severe COVID-19 outcomes.

Impact of COVID-19 on exercise pathophysiology: a combined cardiopulmonary and echocardiographic exercise study

Claudia Baratto et al.

Summary: At the time of hospital discharge, patients with COVID-19 present with reduced functional capacity and exercise hyperventilation. Peripheral factors, namely reduced oxygen extraction (myopathy) and anemia, which are not fully compensated by a supernormal cardiac output response, account for exercise limitation before exhaustion of the respiratory reserve. Enhanced chemoreflex sensitivity, rather increased dead space, mainly accounts for exercise hyperventilation. The pulmonary vascular response to exercise circulation of survived patients with COVID-19 does not present major pathological changes.

Chest radiography is a poor predictor of respiratory symptoms and functional impairment in survivors of severe COVID-19 pneumonia

Rebecca F. D'Cruz et al.

Summary: A standardized approach to assessing COVID-19 survivors has not been established due to limited data on medium- and long-term outcomes. This study found that persistent symptoms, adverse mental health outcomes, and physiological impairment are common 2 months after severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Follow-up chest radiography may not effectively monitor recovery, highlighting the importance of holistic face-to-face assessments for early recognition and management of post-COVID-19 sequelae.
