Microalgal-bacterial consortia unveil distinct physiological changes to facilitate growth of microalgae

Isiri Adhiwarie Perera et al.

Summary: The physiological changes driving microalgal-bacterial consortia were studied by assessing the ability of five distinct microalgae to establish consortia with a bacterial strain. Results showed an increase in pigments, a decrease in ROS, and an enhanced lipid yield in consortia compared to individual cultures. Additionally, differential regulation of cellular metabolites was observed, indicating efficient consortia development with required physiological changes for potential wastewater treatment and metabolite production.

Azospirillum brasilense reduces oxidative stress in the green microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana under different stressors

Haixin Peng et al.

Summary: This study found that the plant growth promoting bacteria A. brasilense can reduce oxidative stress in green microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana during co-culture, resulting in increased chlorophyll content by secreting the auxin hormone. Additionally, A. brasilense can mitigate the effects of copper stress and nitrogen limitation on algae product accumulation.

The joint effect of ammonium and pH on the growth of Chlorella vulgaris and ammonium removal in artificial liquid digestate

Renyuan Jiang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the joint effect of ammonium and pH on the growth of C. vulgaris and nutrient removal, finding that free ammonia is the main inhibitory factor. Microalgae showed high tolerance to free ammonia, while the stress from free ammonia stimulated the production of extracellular organic matters, beneficial for microalgae adaptation but adverse for pollutant removal.
