Tensile properties and fire residue morphology of flame-retarded-polypropylene composites

Ji-Zhao Liang

Summary: This study investigated the properties of polypropylene composites filled with different flame retardants. The results showed that the tensile strength and Young's modulus increased with increasing flame-retardant volume fraction, while the tensile yield strength and elongation at break decreased. Among the composites with the same flame-retardant content, the one loaded with polyolefin elastomer and nanometer calcium carbonate exhibited the highest elongation at break. The addition of flame retardants, especially at low concentrations, increased the fire residue in the pyrolysis zone of the specimens.

Composition changes, releases, and potential exposure risk of PBDEs from typical E-waste plastics

Kaihan Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the change trends of PBDEs and AHFRs in typical e-waste plastics and dust, as well as human exposure risks of PBDEs in different settings. The results show higher levels of PBDEs in dust from e-waste recycling enterprises compared to residential buildings. The exposure risk of PBDEs mainly comes from dust intake rather than skin contact.

Sustainable and efficient flame retardant materials for achieving high fire safety for polystyrene composites

Nour F. Attia

Summary: The study developed novel porous carbon sheets as a green, renewable, cost-effective, and efficient flame retardant material for thermoplastic polymers. The porous graphite sheets exhibited significant improvements in fire safety and flame retardancy of developed polystyrene composites, attributed to their charing capability and porous structure effect in conjunction with natural doping of desirable elemental composition. This research provides a new tool for producing scalable, green, renewable, and cost-effective flame retardant and smoke suppressant materials for thermoplastic polymers.

Bio-Based Flame-Retardant Coatings Based on the Synergistic Combination of Tannic Acid and Phytic Acid for Nylon-Cotton Blends

Sourabh Kulkarni et al.

Summary: Natural and synthetic polymeric fibers are widely used for fabric production, with nyco being a 50-50% blend of nylon 66 and cotton often used for military uniforms due to its durability and comfort. A novel surface functionalization method using a combination of bio-based materials, tannic acid (TA) and phytic acid (PA), was employed to impart flame-retardant properties to the nyco fabric. The synergistic combination of TA and PA enhances char formation, leading to improved flame retardancy for nyco.

Synthesis of a novel P-N flame retardant for preparing flame retardant and durable cotton fabric

Jinfeng Li et al.

Summary: A novel flame retardant containing high amounts of P and N elements was designed and grafted onto cotton fabric via P-O-C covalent bonds, showing improved flame retardancy and durability. The treated cotton exhibited lower peak heat release rate, total heat release, and initial decomposition temperatures, as well as increased carbon residue during combustion, indicating the formation of an expanded char layer. Various spectroscopic techniques confirmed the flame retardant mechanism, and the mechanical properties of the treated cotton remained suitable for use after treatment.
