Agriculture carbon-emission reduction and changing factors behind agricultural eco-efficiency growth in China

Huan Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of agricultural carbon emissions (ACE) and agricultural ecoefficiency (AEE) in China, as well as the driving factors of AEE growth. Using provincial data from 2001 to 2018, the study finds that ACE has shifted from increasing to continuously decreasing after 2015, mainly driven by major grain-producing areas. It also reveals that the AEE growth mechanism changed after 2010, primarily due to technological progress. The improvement of agricultural infrastructure and human capital positively contribute to AEE growth, while public investment in agricultural R&D and agricultural industrial structure undermine it. Therefore, green-oriented policies and targeted agricultural public investments are needed to achieve both ACE reduction and AEE growth.

How does industrial structure adjustment reduce CO2 emissions? Spatial and mediation effects analysis for China

Jun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of industrial structure adjustment on carbon emissions in China and explores the mediating role of energy efficiency in this relationship. The findings suggest that industrial structure upgrading can reduce CO2 emissions, while industrial structure optimization may increase carbon emissions.

The Effect of Off-Farm Employment on Agricultural Production Efficiency: Micro Evidence in China

Ming Chang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of off-farm employment on agricultural productivity efficiency in China using data from the China Family Panel Studies. The findings indicate that off-farm employment lowers agricultural productivity efficiency, with self-employed off-farm employment having a greater negative effect. The study also identifies a threshold level of off-farm employment where the negative effect disappears.

Energy and carbon footprints for irrigation water in the lower Indus basin in Pakistan, comparing water supply by gravity fed canal networks and groundwater pumping

A. W. Siyal et al.

Summary: This study compares the energy and carbon footprints of irrigation water provided by gravity-fed irrigation networks and groundwater pumping systems. Groundwater, while only contributing 6% to total irrigation water supply in the lower Indus basin, dominates energy use and CO2 emissions. Shifting from groundwater pumping to properly maintaining gravity-fed canal systems can decrease energy use and CO2 emissions, while increasing surface water availability.

Performance of community-based water-saving technology under land fragmentation: evidence from groundwater overexploitation in the North China Plain

Hongxu Shi et al.

Summary: The study found that high land fragmentation hinders the effectiveness of community-based water-saving technologies in improving farmers' irrigation water use efficiency, while household WSTs perform better. Therefore, the government should promote community-based WSTs in areas with low land fragmentation.

Assessment to China's Recent Emission Pattern Shifts

Yuru Guan et al.

Summary: Energy and emission data are crucial for climate change research and mitigation efforts, with accurate energy statistics being essential for mitigation strategies and evaluating low carbon energy transition efforts. This study provides updated emission inventories for China and its provinces for 2018 and 2019, while also updating CO2 emission inventories based on revised energy statistics since 2012.

Assessing energy poverty and its effect on CO2 emissions: The case of China

Jun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study examines the dynamic impact of energy poverty on CO2 emissions in China from 2002 to 2017, revealing that energy poverty may accelerate the growth of CO2 emissions. In regions with high levels of energy poverty, there is a bidirectional causal link between energy poverty and CO2 emissions.
