Electrodialysis of softened produced water from shale gas development

Harry Finklea et al.

Summary: Electrodialysis (ED) technology is applied to treat hypersaline solutions like produced water. Softened produced water and simulated softened produced water are converted into diluates and concentrates using electrodialysis in two stages. The effect of ion exchange membranes on trace ions' mass balances is significant, and anionic species tend to accumulate in the diluate. The final diluate has a low TDS and can be further treated by reverse osmosis.

Adsorption and desorption of water-soluble naphthenic acid in simulated offshore oilfield produced water

Letiane Thomas Hendges et al.

Summary: The removal of water-soluble organics compounds in oilfield produced water is a major challenge to meet environmental legislation, with research indicating that specific adsorbents can help improve this issue and achieve regeneration while enhancing process feasibility. The study also suggests that the adsorption process is greatly influenced by the characteristics of the adsorbents, with the mechanism involving a transition from multilayer to monolayer adsorption.
