Nutrient Improvements in Chesapeake Bay: Direct Effect of Load Reductions and Implications for Coastal Management

Rebecca R. Murphy et al.

Summary: The study finds that nutrient loads in Chesapeake Bay are mostly improving after accounting for variations in freshwater flow, with reductions from nearby point sources slightly more effective in explaining estuarine nutrient trends than reductions from rivers. Both types of loads from multiple locations across the watershed are together necessary and responsible for the improving estuarine nutrient conditions.

Four kinds of capping materials for controlling phosphorus and nitrogen release from contaminated sediment using a static simulation experiment

Zhenming Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of thin-layer capping with quartz sand, water treatment plant sludge, aluminum-based P-inactivation agent, and lanthanum-modified bentonite on the release of phosphorus and nitrogen from sediment. The results showed that thin-layer capping with bentonite effectively controlled the release of phosphorus, but had limited impact on the release of ammonium nitrogen and organic matter.

Utilization of gel-type polystyrene host for immobilization of nano-sized hydrated zirconium oxides: A new strategy for enhanced phosphate removal

Xin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study developed a new strategy to enhance phosphate adsorptive removal by immobilizing zirconium oxides nanoparticles onto a gel-type anion exchange resin, denoted as HZO@N201, which exhibited superior phosphate adsorptive capacity and affinity towards phosphate compared to HZO@D201. The results showed that HZO@N201 had smaller particle size and richer surface hydroxyl groups, facilitating phosphate diffusion and inner-sphere complexes formation, leading to enhanced reactivity and effective treatable volume in fixed-bed runs. The gel-type polymeric host was believed to promote the dispersion of smaller nanoparticles and expose more surface hydroxyl groups, offering insights to a new strategy for immobilization of functional nanoparticles for enhanced phosphate removal.

Xudong Zheng et al.

Summary: The bionic-inspired tannin-modified composite membrane effectively adsorbs total phosphorus and ammonia nitrogen in water, with better adsorption capacity for ammonia nitrogen. The maximum adsorption capacities were 482.35 mg/g for ammonia nitrogen and 374.71 mg/g for total phosphorus. The adsorption process belonged to single-layer adsorption, reaching equilibrium within 360 minutes.

Globally consistent assessment of coastal eutrophication

Eligio de Raus Maure et al.

Summary: This study introduces the first global interactive assessment tool of coastal eutrophication potential based on Google Earth Engine, finding that approximately 1.15 million square kilometers of coastal waters globally have eutrophic potential. Areas with eutrophication potential, indicated by increasing trends in satellite-derived chlorophyll-a, are twice as large as those showing signs of recovery. The tool effectively identifies regions with severe symptoms of eutrophication, as well as areas with limited to no information on eutrophication.
