Physiological mechanisms and adaptation strategies of Lactuca sativa L. in response to Olea europaea L. and Ficus carica L. allelochemicals

Afef Ladhari et al.

Summary: Agro-industrial wastes of Ficus carica L. and Olea europaea L. are important sources of bioactive phenolic compounds that can be used as potential bioherbicides. This study investigated the biochemical and physiological mechanisms of action of fig and olive allelochemicals on lettuce, revealing that these compounds induce oxidative stress and trigger adaptive responses in lettuce, leading to the activation of defense systems and increased antioxidant levels. The study also found a correlation between the activation of the phenylpropanoid pathway and the presence of phenolic compounds in lettuce tissues.

Evaluation of the combined effect of elevated temperature and cadmium toxicity on Daphnia magna using a simplified DEBtox model

Joorim Na et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the combined effects of elevated temperature and cadmium toxicity on Daphnia magna using a dynamic energy budget model. It found that under elevated temperatures, D. magna had shorter body lengths but higher reproduction rates, while increasing Cd concentrations led to reduced somatic growth and reproduction, with a greater effect at 25 degrees Celsius compared to 20 degrees Celsius. The modeling approach correctly simulated the potentiation effect of Cd toxicity by elevated temperature, predicting a linear decrease in population growth rate with increasing Cd concentrations.

Nano-TiO2 Phototoxicity in Fresh and Seawater: Daphnia magna and Artemia sp. as Proxies

Ana C. Soler de la Vega et al.

Summary: The study found that nTiO(2) exhibited toxicity towards freshwater Daphnia magna, but not towards seawater Artemia sp. However, when exposed to higher concentrations of nTiO(2) and solar radiation, Artemia sp. also showed toxicity. The results suggest that nTiO(2) could potentially have negative impacts on these aquatic organisms.
