Phytoplankton biomass and photophysiology at the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands ecosystem in the Southern Ocean

T. Lamont et al.

Summary: The study found that the phytoplankton biomass around the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands (PEIs) was influenced by the enhanced phytoplankton levels, but in fact, the chlorophyll a (chla) levels in the surrounding ocean were higher than on the island shelf. The research also suggested that the upwelling and retention effect along the PEIs shelf may have been disrupted by enhanced offshore advection from mesoscale eddies.

Quantification of the impact of environmental factors on chlorophyll in the open ocean

Zhao Dandan et al.

Summary: This study quantified the relationship between chlorophyll (CHL) and environmental factors (SST, MLD, and WS) in the subtropical gyres, and found that mixed-layer depth (MLD) was positively correlated with CHL, sea surface temperature (SST) was negatively correlated with CHL, and the correlation between CHL and wind stress (WS) could be either positive or negative. Models established through regression analysis showed that SST and MLD were major determinants of CHL change in the open ocean.

Mesoscale eddies influencing the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands archipelago: Temporal variability and impact

T. Lamont et al.

Summary: Mesoscale eddies in the Prince Edward Island (PEI) region of the Southern Ocean were identified and tracked using satellite altimetry over a 26-year period between 1993 and 2018. Most eddies impacting the PEIs originated from the southern branch of the sub-Antarctic Front (S-SAF) and the northern branch of the Antarctic Polar Front (N-APF), rather than from the eddy hotspot east of the Southwest Indian Ridge. Despite the small number of eddies directly impacting the islands each year, they can influence conditions for a considerable part of the year through contact with the PEI shelf, with eddy stirring potentially playing a more frequent role than eddy trapping.

Resource Colimitation Drives Competition Between Phytoplankton and Bacteria in the Southern Ocean

Lavenia Ratnarajah et al.

Summary: The study examined competition for iron between phytoplankton and bacteria in the iron-limited Southern Ocean. Results show that increased iron and light favor phytoplankton dominance, while increased LDOC and decreased light favor bacterial dominance. Bacteria can outcompete phytoplankton for iron under elevated LDOC conditions.

Characterising the seasonal cycle of wind forcing, surface circulation and temperature around the sub-Antarctic Prince Edward Islands

T. Toolsee et al.

Summary: This study provides the first seasonal characterization of surface hydrography at the Prince Edward Islands, with findings of differences in sea surface temperature, wind speed, currents, geostrophic currents, and Ekman currents at different locations around the islands. The study also highlights the relationship between geostrophic currents and wind speed, and the islands acting as a barrier to the flow downstream. This seasonal characterization serves as a baseline for assessing interannual/decadal variability and future changes in these parameters.

Plankton community composition and productivity near the Subantarctic Prince Edward Islands archipelago in autumn

Luca Stirnimann et al.

Summary: The Subantarctic Ocean serves as a carbon sink due to the influence of the Subantarctic islands on the plankton ecosystem. Recent studies of the Prince Edward Islands archipelago show a dominant presence of nanophytoplankton post late-summer bloom, with significant nutrient regeneration contributing to phytoplankton growth. Despite high rates of recycling and inefficient trophic transfer, roughly a quarter of planktonic carbon remains potentially exportable, highlighting the archipelago's role in sequestering atmospheric CO2 and strengthening the Subantarctic Ocean's biological pump.

Manganese co-limitation of phytoplankton growth and major nutrient drawdown in the Southern Ocean

Thomas J. Browning et al.

Summary: The text discusses the issue of residual nutrients in the Southern Ocean, emphasizing the importance of manganese in influencing the marine ecosystem and nutrient cycling. Experimental results show that manganese plays a key role in controlling phytoplankton growth, particularly in the central Drake Passage.

Evidence for the Impact of Climate Change on Primary Producers in the Southern Ocean

Matthew H. Pinkerton et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes trends and future projections of phytoplankton biomass, primary production, and irradiance in the Southern Ocean within the MEASO framework. Satellite observations show an increase in phytoplankton biomass but likely decrease in primary production. Earth system models project increasing NPP in the Northern and Antarctic zones but decreases in the Subantarctic zone over the next 100 years.
