A Time Series Investigation to Assess Climate Change and Anthropogenic Impacts on Quantitative Land Degradation in the North Delta, Egypt

Mohamed A. E. AbdelRahman et al.

Summary: The current study evaluated soil deterioration processes over the past five decades in Kafr El-Sheikh Governorate, Egypt. The assessment revealed severe soil deterioration risks, including water-logging, soil compaction, salinization, and alkalization. The study emphasized the need to protect the fragile soil system in the region, especially under the pressure of population overload and climate change.

Soil salinity assessment of a natural pasture using remote sensing techniques in central Anatolia, Turkey

Orhan Mete Kilic et al.

Summary: Soil salinity is a major land degradation process in arid and semi-arid regions, which reduces biological productivity. Recent developments in remote sensing technology have made it possible to accurately identify and effectively monitor soil salinity. This study found a correlation between the remote sensing dataset created using Landsat 5 TM satellite image and the electrical conductivity values of soil samples, but the models obtained using satellite image did not provide reliable results in determining soil salinity. Microtopography and low spatial resolution of the satellite image were identified as factors affecting the accuracy of the models.

Deciphering Soil Spatial Variability through Geostatistics and Interpolation Techniques

Mohamed A. E. AbdelRahman et al.

Summary: Detailed knowledge of soil properties is crucial for optimizing agricultural practices. Different geostatistical methods were used to study the spatial variability of soil properties in a reclaimed area of Egypt, showing that Inverse Distance Weighting (IDW) was more efficient than Kriging for mapping soil properties.

The Influence of Environmental Factors on Seed Germination of Polygonum perfoliatum L.: Implications for Management

Shahid Farooq et al.

Summary: The study found that Polygonum perfoliatum seeds have a high adaptability to environmental factors such as temperature, light, soil pH, osmotic potential, and salinity. The number of seeds in the soil also affects the emergence of seedlings. This provides a theoretical basis for the management of this species.
