Modelling Snowmelt Runoff from Tropical Andean Glaciers under Climate Change Scenarios in the Santa River Sub-Basin (Peru)

Elmer Calizaya et al.

Summary: The effects of climate change, such as decreased precipitation and increased temperature, have led to sharp declines in glaciers and increased surface runoff due to snowmelt in various regions. The study applied the snowmelt runoff model (SRM) along with other climatic data to model snowmelt runoff in the Santa River sub-basin and projected future runoff under different climate change scenarios. The results showed consistent patterns of runoff changes, with decreases in summer months and increases throughout the rest of the year, with substantial increases projected in early months and lower records in summer.

Contemporary glacial lakes in the Peruvian Andes

J. L. Wood et al.

Summary: Glacier recession due to climate warming has led to the growth in size and number of glacial lakes, impacting water resources and glacier mass balance, as well as posing risks of glacial lake outburst floods. By creating a comprehensive inventory of glacial lakes in Peru, this study addresses knowledge gaps and provides reproducible methods for consistent monitoring in other mountainous regions. The inventory reveals that the majority of glacial lakes are detached from glaciers, with different dam types affecting lake size variations. This inventory serves as a crucial first step in understanding glacial lakes and assessing risks associated with glacial lake outburst floods.

High-accuracy continuous mapping of surface water dynamics using automatic update of training samples and temporal consistency modification based on Google Earth Engine: A case study from Huizhou, China

Kewei Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a high-accuracy method for long-term mapping of surface water by automatic update of training samples and temporal consistency modification in surface water sequences. The results show a statistically significant upward trend in the maximum annual water areas of Huizhou over 35 years, mainly driven by reservoir construction and aquaculture expansion. The method offers important advantages in terms of the accuracy of annual surface water maps and change monitoring.

The Retreat of Mountain Glaciers since the Little Ice Age: A Spatially Explicit Database

Silvio Marta et al.

Summary: Most mountain glaciers around the world have been retreating for over a century in response to climate change. This dataset provides spatially explicit information on the positions of glacier fronts since the Little Ice Age maxima, offering valuable insights into glacier retreat patterns and impacts on mountain ecosystems. The dataset includes historical archival records and covers 94 glacier fronts from all continents except Antarctica, spanning the past 190 years.

Spatio-temporal changes in the Machoi glacier Zanskar Himalaya India using geospatial technology

Ajay Kumar Taloor et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the temporal changes of the Machoi glacier in the Zanskar region of the north-western Himalaya, India from 1973 to 2018 using multi-temporal Landsat satellite data, revealing a consistent retreat with varying rates over the past 45 years. The glacier snout retreated an average of 563 meters, with different retreat rates in different time intervals, particularly showing a higher rate during 2010-2018, possibly influenced by climate change factors such as increased temperature and decreased solid precipitation.
