Calibration of the Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar Onboard the Global Precipitation Measurement Core Observatory

Takeshi Masaki et al.

Summary: This article presents the four-year calibration results of the dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) onboard the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory. The hardware and data processing methods were improved based on the lessons learned from the calibration of the precipitation radar (PR) on the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. The new calibration parameters provide more precise measurements for DPR.

Examining the Consistency of Precipitation Rate Estimates between the TRMM and GPM Ku-Band Radars

Shinta Seto

Summary: The study compares the estimation of precipitation and related variables between PR and KuPR for a common observation area and period. It is found that KuPR records a larger total precipitation amount than PR due to differences in sensitivity, and for heavy precipitation, PR shows a smaller radar reflectivity factor and a larger precipitation estimate.

How Many Types of Severe Hailstorm Environments Are There Globally?

Ziwei Zhou et al.

Summary: This study explores the global differences in the five distinct environmental types producing severe hailstorms, revealing variations in convective mode and embryo type. The presence of multiple environment types highlights the challenges in modeling present frequency and anticipating the response of hail to climate change.

Recent decadal enhancement of Meiyu-Baiu heavy rainfall over East Asia

Hiroshi G. Takahashi et al.

Summary: Moist air transport in East Eurasia leads to the formation of the Meiyu-Baiu front, which has recently experienced increased heavy rainfall. Satellite radar data confirms this enhancement, with a 24% increase in heavy precipitation along the front over the past 22 years. These changes are linked to a strengthened Pacific subtropical high and weakened tropical cyclone activity, highlighting the need for adaptation in disaster prevention strategies.

The Synoptically-Influenced Extreme Precipitation Systems over Asian-Australian Monsoon Region observed by TRMM Precipitation Radar

Hong-Wen Jian et al.

Summary: This study investigates extreme rainfall systems over the Asian-Australian monsoon region using 17 years of observation data. Different types of systems were identified and classified based on their synoptic wind patterns and rainfall distribution, showing variations in occurrence frequency across seasons and regions.
