Improving Landslide Detection on SAR Data Through Deep Learning

Lorenzo Nava et al.

Summary: In this study, deep learning convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were used to compare the mapping and classification performances of optical images and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images in landslide detection. The results showed that CNNs based on optical images achieved an overall accuracy of 98.96% in landslide detection, while CNNs based on SAR data reached accuracies beyond 95% in ground range detection.

Landslide detection by deep learning of non-nadiral and crowdsourced optical images

Filippo Catani

Summary: Recent advancements in mobile surveying platforms and crowdsourced geoinformation have led to a vast amount of unvalidated data available for research. This has prompted the development of convolutional neural networks specifically designed for automated landslide recognition in non-standard images, showing promise in improving efficiency in landslide hazard studies.

Rapid mapping of landslides in the Western Ghats (India) triggered by 2018 extreme monsoon rainfall using a deep learning approach

Sansar Raj Meena et al.

Summary: This study utilized deep learning convolution neural networks with topographical data to map rainfall-induced landslides in the Kodagu district of India. By combining spectral information with slope data, the model achieved higher overall accuracy and reduced false positives, aiding in accurately identifying landslide areas. The methodology can be applied to other landslide-prone regions for hazard mitigation support.

A new strategy to map landslides with a generalized convolutional neural network

Nikhil Prakash et al.

Summary: This research proposes a novel strategy for training convolutional neural networks (CNN) by combining inventories from different regions to build a generalized model that can be directly applied to new, unexplored areas. The study demonstrates that CNNs trained on combined inventories have better generalization performance when mapping landslides in new unseen regions.

Landslide Mapping Using Two Main Deep-Learning Convolution Neural Network Streams Combined by the Dempster-Shafer Model

Omid Ghorbanzadeh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of deep learning CNN technology combined with optical data and topographic factors for earthquake-induced landslide mapping. By training CNN streams with different datasets and combining the results, as well as comparing the mapping results through mean intersection-over-union, it was found that using spectral information and slope topographic factors can improve the mapping accuracy. The improvement of the mean intersection-over-union ranged from approximately zero to more than 17%, and the Dempster-Shafer model was effective in combining results from different scenarios.
