Optimal scaling of predictors for digital mapping of soil properties

Andrei Dornik et al.

Summary: A new algorithm is introduced in the study to derive terrain attributes at different scales for optimal mapping of soil properties, highlighting the importance of scaled predictors in improving mapping accuracy. Results showed that optimized predictors led to more accurate and less uncertain soil property maps compared to original not scaled or all multiscale predictors.

Summary: The study reviewed recent research achievements related to spaceborne and aerial Earth Observation (EO) data-driven monitoring from 2019 to 2021. It identified inherent limitations associated with EO-based soil mapping and proposed solutions to overcome these challenges, such as leveraging artificial intelligence techniques, sharing harmonized labeled datasets, and fusion with in situ sensing systems. The review concluded that best practices for advancing an EO data-driven soil mapping include addressing resolution and processing limitations, as well as political and administrative issues.

Temporal mosaicking approaches of Sentinel-2 images for extending topsoil organic carbon content mapping in croplands

Emmanuelle Vaudour et al.

Summary: The spatial assessment of soil organic carbon (SOC) using Sentinel-2 satellite images is challenging due to limited applicability of spectral models on bare soils. This study compared different temporal mosaic approaches to predict SOC content, highlighting the importance of combining multiple indicators such as moisture, bare soil, and roughness for maintaining accuracy and extending coverage over larger areas.
