Steric and atmospheric contributions to interannual sea level variability in the eastern mediterranean sea over 1993-2019

Bayoumy Mohamed et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sea level trends and driving mechanisms in the eastern Mediterranean basin. The results show that the thermosteric component, mainly influenced by temperature, has the largest contribution to sea level change, while the halosteric effect, influenced by salinity, has a negative contribution. The main recurrent gyres in the basin have the strongest variability and trends in sea level. Over the study period, all tide gauges showed a positive and statistically significant trend.

Climatic, Decadal, and Interannual Variability in the Upper Layer of the Mediterranean Sea Using Remotely Sensed and In-Situ Data

Milena Menna et al.

Summary: The Mediterranean Sea is a hotspot of global warming, with rising sea levels, increasing sea surface temperature, and sea surface salinity. This study identifies the interconnections between these parameters and their impact on climate. The Mediterranean and its sub-basins exhibit consistent behavior on a climatic scale, while the Northern Ionian Gyre circulation reversals and local structures have a significant influence on decadal variability.

Marine Heatwaves Characteristics in the Barents Sea Based on High Resolution Satellite Data (1982-2020)

Bayoumy Mohamed et al.

Summary: This study examines the spatiotemporal evolution of marine heatwaves in the Barents Sea and finds that the region has experienced accelerated warming and an increase in the frequency and duration of marine heatwaves. The Eastern Atlantic Pattern is identified as a significant factor in controlling marine heatwave characteristics. These findings highlight the potential ecological and socio-economic consequences of marine heatwaves in the Barents Sea.

Climate Signals in the Black Sea From a Multidecadal Eddy-Resolving Reanalysis

Leonardo Lima et al.

Summary: Ocean reanalyses are increasingly important for reconstructing and providing an overview of the ocean state from the past to the present day. The Black Sea reanalysis system utilizes advanced methods to combine observation data and ocean models to respond effectively to climate change. It continuously improves the accuracy of temperature, salinity, and sea level estimates, and further developments in ocean modeling and data assimilation are essential for enhancing the quality of the reanalysis.

Spatiotemporal Variability and Trends of Marine Heat Waves in the Red Sea over 38 Years

Bayoumy Mohamed et al.

Summary: Marine heat waves can have catastrophic consequences for the socio-environmental system, especially in the Red Sea. Analysis of sea surface temperature variability and trends in the Red Sea from 1982-2019 shows an average warming rate of 0.342 +/- 0.047 degrees C/decade, with increases in MHW frequency and duration over the past two decades. The strong correlation between MHW frequency and annual mean SST indicates a potential link between warming temperatures and more frequent marine heat waves in the Red Sea.
