Open-Source Analysis of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Cover in Complex Waters Using High-Resolution Satellite Remote Sensing: An Adaptable Framework

Arthur de Grandpre et al.

Summary: This paper presents a flexible and efficient workflow for monitoring the distribution of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) using open-source software and high-resolution remote sensing technology. SAV cover maps are generated in complex aquatic environments through radiometric calibration, atmospheric correction, de-striping correction, and object-based image analysis. The classification performance demonstrates the accuracy of the workflow, with an error rate of less than 10% in most SAV classes.

Cloud-native Seascape Mapping of Mozambique's Quirimbas National Park with Sentinel-2

Dimitris Poursanidis et al.

Summary: The study developed a semi-automated workflow that utilizes Sentinel-2 data from the European Space Agency to derive information on near-shore coral reef habitats in the Quirimbas National Park. The use of random forests, support vector machine, and classification and regression trees algorithms resulted in random forests being the most accurate supervised algorithm with over 82% overall accuracy. Over 105,000 hectares of shallow water habitat were mapped inside the protected area, dominated by coral, hardbottom, seagrass, and soft and sandy substrates.

A Review of Remote Sensing of Submerged Aquatic Vegetation for Non-Specialists

Gillian S. L. Rowan et al.

Summary: Submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) is a critical but understudied component of aquatic ecosystems, which is rapidly changing due to global climate change and human disturbances. Remote sensing (RS) offers efficient and accurate large-scale monitoring for proper SAV management, though its application to underwater ecosystems is complicated by the water column effect and requires careful consideration of sensor selection and data processing methods. Successful use of RS for SAV identification and detection depends on factors such as data quality, resolution, and the specific research goals.
