On the structural damping response of hollow carbon composite shafts with room temperature curable novel acrylic liquid thermoplastic resin

Goram Gohel et al.

Summary: This research investigates the damping response of hollow tubular structures using a novel acrylic liquid thermoplastic Elium resin and different carbon fiber reinforcement materials. The results show that the use of the new materials increases the damping of the structure, with carbon fiber reinforcement having a greater effect on damping enhancement. Additionally, the thickness of the tube has a positive effect on damping, while an increase in fiber volume fraction has a negative effect.

Investigating the roles of fiber, resin, and stacking sequence on the low-velocity impact response of novel hybrid thermoplastic composites

M. E. Kazemi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different fiber types, resin types, and stacking sequences on the dynamic response of fiber-reinforced polymer composite laminates under low-velocity impact tests. Results show that the hybrid system with UHMWPE fibers on the sides demonstrates lower structural loss and absorbed energy, and the newly developed TP laminate exhibits extended plasticity and ductile behavior. Additionally, the TP laminate shows lower structural loss, contact force, and absorbed energy compared to the TS counterparts.

Manufacturing Optimization and Experimental Investigation of Ex-situ Core-shell Particles Toughened Carbon/Elium® Thermoplastic Composites

Somen K. Bhudolia et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of core-shell particles in novel carbon/Elium (R) composites, emphasizing on static indentation, carbon fiber reinforcement, and load drop reduction. Microscopic examination shows that core-shell particles help in spreading damage evenly and absorbing more energy during static-indentation. The addition of core-shell particles also increases the loss factor or damping in thick ply Elium (R) composite and thin ply epoxy composite, offering improvements in quasi-static impact and dynamic mechanical tests.

Enhanced impact energy absorption and failure characteristics of novel fully thermoplastic and hybrid composite bicycle helmet shells

Somen K. Bhudolia et al.

Summary: Current research has shown that fully thermoplastic and hybrid composite helmets exhibit significantly higher energy absorption capabilities compared to polycarbonate helmets, leading to improved safety. The usage of composite shells minimizes energy transfer to the foam attached to the human head, reducing the risk of critical and fatal head injuries.

Development and impact characterization of acrylic thermoplastic composite bicycle helmet shell with improved safety and performance

Goram Gohel et al.

Summary: The study suggests that helmets manufactured using thermoplastic composite materials exhibit better performance in impact tests, with higher ductility and reduced damage compared to traditional carbon fiber/epoxy composites. Due to improved energy absorption and less catastrophic damage, these thermoplastic composite helmets have a greater advantage in protecting human head safety.
